Sound cards

Errr... a "sound card" is a piece of hardware, so yes, you will have to buy one unless they've recently invented a way of sending physical items over the internet

(serious here) You probably better latch onto a buddy thats into PC's, or your gonna lose your pants here - It's a piece of hardware (as someone else said) and could cost anything from 30 to 400 bucks depending on what you need. Get hold of a third party, tell, em what you want, and get 'em to go shopping with ya (and help fit it) or you are gonna get fleeced by someone

Want proof? I upgraded my RAM last week in my PC. Cost me 50 bucks because I knew what I wanted and how to fit it. However, if I wandered into Harvey Norman, they would have charged me $170...uninstalled.

If you are only listening to sound then buy the very basic of sound cards. The only reason you would want an expensive one is:

a) surround sound (5point, 7 point)
b) If you are into recording sound, or ripping sound, esp. if you want to rip in surround..

Don't buy from Harvey norman. They will charge you way too much

I got a 16 bit soundcard you can have for 100 bucks ... seriously, u could get ripped off big time if you ain't sure what you are doing. I am surprised your PC hasn't got a soundcard in it as they almost all come with one standard these days.

As previous posters have said, if possible get a friend who knows what's what to have a look and advise you.

Thanks for the help guys. I previously had Windows 95 installed on my computer, but yesterday I had Windows 98 installed and it worked like a charm, i have sound again!.

(Mind you I wasnt the one that installed 98, a family friend did it for me while I was at Uni. He also installed a new sound card, my old one "died", can't remember the name of it though.)

But remember if you install Windows 98, you have to download a new hard drive within 7 days of the installation, or else it crashes.
