I said in another thread - and I still haven't changed my opinion on the issue, btw - that Llane is a long way off being ready for senior footy.

Well, the good news is the Spaanderman today produced what was easily his most convincing display in Lions colours.

Playing against what is admittedly a very ordinary outfit in Labrador, Llane, after an average first half, exploded after the main break. Must have taken 8 or 9 marks, with 4 or 5 being contested grabs. His confidence rising with every contest.

Regardless of the opposition, it was the first time Spaanderman started to use his size and bulk, and with the confidence up, the fumbles that had previously riddled his game disappeared.

The Lions, with only six listed players to choose from, defeated Labrador 7.13 to 5.7.

Stiller and Ryswyk and Rischitelli and Logan were outstanding contributors and Drummond did well at fullback.

That's good then.

As I said in the other thread. Regardless if he is ready or not, one game won't hurt him.

One game could do more than hurt him, it could kill his career before it starts.

This is a KID we are talking about. It's not like we're telling Lappin he has to go be our ruckman for the next few weeks. He's a seasoned performer that can take a few weeks spanking out of position with the knowledge that once injuries and suspension permits he can go back to what he does best and pick up where he left off. And even then he wouldn't step strait back into it, he'd have to find his way and get the feel for it back again.

Put a brand new kid in the deep end of the trough and we are risking sacraficing his potential because of injured and suspended players. A KID can't handle that. He can't handle much at all.

It's great to hear he stood up to the plate today, and if he can do that week in and out, he'll be pushing for senior selection. But it won't be for Ruck selection, and I for one wouldn't want to see him sacraficed because of injury and idiocy of some of our senior players. If we do, it's a waste of a youngster that we can ill afford.

Interestingly enough, this is what today's Herald Sun said.

"Brisbane Lions injury crisis could be a bonus for the club's number 1 draft pick, Llane Spaanderman. The 18 year old recruited from East Perth at pick No 18 last year, wasn't expected to see action this year.

But at 198cm, Spaanderman is in demand.

After a handy game with the Suncoast Lions in the QAFL, Spaanderman seems certain to make his debut against Melbourne at the Gabba on Sunday.

The Lions are desperate for big men with Clark Keating (shoulder) and Mal Michael (Thigh) joining the injured Beau McDonald (knee) Alistair Lynch (ankle) and Darryl White (ankle) on the sidelines.

Jonathan Brown and Jamie Charman are suspended. The Lions injury list also includes Chris Scott (Groin) and Blake Caracella (Shoulder)."

They're speculating that he is certain to make his debut this week. Thinking about it, they could be right.

Even if we stick him down in the forward line or defence, he should be a goer. With Mal Michael gone, Melbourne are going to use a huge forward line so we are going to need Bradshaw down there. Perhaps Spaanderman at FF or CHF? And perhaps a bit of tap rucking.

However, due to us needing Height, he needs to come in this week. Whether he is being thrown in the deep end, or not, we need him as a forward or a ruck. People have got to remember that Jared Brennan was thrown in the deep end last year in his first game, on Chris Tarrant. That may seem different but it's not. Use Llane as a KPP this week and be done with it. We need him especially with the likelyhood of Bradshaw playing down back on Neitz.

And by the sounds of the reserves yesterday, he's done something just in time. We need him this week and we should select him this week.

no option, the boy has to play , no maybes . even if played at full forward he could contest and get the ball to the ground for the crumbers with short runs in the ruck. maybe young and raw but their is nothing else. he was drafted to play seniors here is his chance maybe for only one week but lets give him a go !!!!

Exactly right. We need the extra tall in the side or I'm afraid Melbourne will pump us and pump us huge.

Like you said, he could contest and get the ball to ground ready for players like McRae, Hadley, Adock, Akermanis to pounce on it and kick a goal.

And whats the difference between playing Spaanderman now and rushing back Chris Scott from injury as early as this week like you suggested in another topic? Which mind you, with the long lay off and his type of injury could wreck his career if he is rushed back so soon without a handful of reserves games to get him back into things.

Answer, nothing.

I wouldn't advocate rushing C. Scott back either, but the difference between the two is that Scott has a mature (though injury prone :( ) body.

The other difference that Scott wouldn't be played anywhere near a ruck contest where he might get targetted with wayward knees or elbows.

If they play him (Llane), it'd be off the bench in the FP I'd expect. I hope his shoulder is up to it. Crackers' obviously wasn't.

Why bring in the kid, just because we need a tall. Poor bugger.

We are better off having a rover in the centre bounces, and shark the ball.

I can lend us my son who is 6ft5.lol.

The problem is that Jeff White will thump the ball 30 metres forward. Therefore its impossible to shark. Any of the theories that we play a 'pretend' ruckman with our superior onballers reading the tap are useless when it's continually being thumped over their heads.

Unfortunately the kid has to play, as suggested by SB & irish. Campbells son might still be handy on the bench though as a backup.

How is this scenario any different to 2000 with McDonald?

He had far from an AFL ready body, and ran around like a chook with it's head cut off.

His improvement over the course of the season was immense. Sometimes, the best thing for people is to be thrown in at the deep end. Learn on the job.

Throw him in - it can't hurt. He'll realise the level that is needed to be an AFL player. Who knows, he may just be the wildcard.

Agree.
Sheedy does it with most of his debutantes. Throws them in at the deep end. He uses important games and puts them on champion players just to test and let them know what it takes to compete at this level.
We have no one over 190cm. Even if Spander is just used as FF it frees up Bradshaw to be used in the Ruck or supporting the back line.
Personally, I don't subscribe to the theory that Spander is not ready. If he is on the list and is being paid a first year draftee salary, he is ready. He may not be fine tuned and able to excel physically like Brown, but no one expects a performance of Brown or Lynch quality. All that is expected of Spander is to give a contest and give his best.
Using players that are not fully recovered from injury is also fraught with danger. An extra weeks rest will have long term benefits.
So in conclusion, unleash SPAANDERMAN.

We would be silly not to play him.

No point in recruiting a ruckman and wrapping him up in cotton wool for a year. It will do him the world of good finding out what it takes to play in the big league. He will have the best engine room in the afl at his feet. I would rather see what the kid has got rather than watch our utilities in the ruck.

Not only that but if he plays alright then why not play him as a backup tall the next week?

That's right.

Unleash SPAANDERMAN.

He isn't on our list for nothing and if he is being paid, he is ready to play. If he isn't ready, he shouldn't have been drafted in the first place.

UNLEASH SPAANDERMAN.

If Melbourne can hype up Davey we can take the liberty and give our own Spaandey a bit of a profile.
