Key Position Player, ie, full forward, centre half forward, centre half back and full back.

You'd think that while nearing the end of his second (or is it third?) season on the list, he would be getting close to selection.

He has been a consistent goal scorer for Swannies.

FF: <up for grabs> - Don't know if Haynes will be there for the rest of his career or not
CHF: Gaspar - Best contested mark I've seen at the eagles in a while
C: Cousins - Classical center IMO.
CHB: McDougall - Has been the popular vote, why argue?
FB: Glass - Some still believe he is a back flanker/pocket at best, i believe he is our FB

Of course, this is based on the players that have played at AFL level. Staker, Seaby and Hansen all look promising too.

Popular vote by who?

Ever since he has been drafted, it has been pretty clear that he is being groomed for a key forward role. Personally, I believe the only reason we have seen Gaspar up forward is out of necessity.

By people on this forum after the weekends game. I didn't see the game, so can't really put up any arguments against him. Is a good contested mark, but Gaspar has looked more promising at CHF (Doogs looked good deep in the forward line against Sydney, so possibly FF?).

CHF is definitely a hot spot between Gasso and Doogs.
Both are agile and athletic and both are still a bit light on the muscle.

I personally prefer Gasso for CHB and Doogs for CHF.

Any indications on Woosh's indication towards anyone for CHF?

David Haynes could be switched to a forward flank, I feel that Woosh is warming up the FF spot for one of the young KPP's.

NOTE: Do you guys worry that Gaspar's turning 23 next year and hasn't made an impact so far due to his injuries??????

I agree. Even though playing him forward has uncovered his great contested marking strength I still think Doogs is the future at CHF.

This is his second season, so he will be going elsewhere at the end of the year unless someone pulls their finger out. I'm sure Geelong would be licking their lips

yes defientaly, but i've said a couple of times our best preperation for the future would be to assume he isn't going to be playing, and if he is thats a bonus.

So with that said;
I think Glass will be the FB in our team
CHB will most likely come from Staker or Lynch
the third tall backman would Hunter, but if the opposition plays a genuine guy as a third key forward, we can play all thre of Staker, Lynch and Glass, while Hunter takes someone a an inch or two smaller than him.

The days of genuine centreman are gone now, as the three midfielders just follow the ball everywhere. In terms of the ruck, Gardiner is obvioubsly our future, with Cox (or Seaby* and Cox being traded) being a back up ruckman and moving through the forward line a bit as well.

In attack, the CHF spot is looking very good for Mr. McDougall, whilst at FF, I think we may end up having a rotation sought of thing going through here depending on what happens with Mr. Hansen and Mr. Johnson.

If one of those two show much promise, than they'll hold down FF, while Haynes will play the third tall man role coming off the half forward flank or forward pocket - he's one of the best leaders in the comp i reckon, and he's hands are usually good but he's kicking is as erratic as they come.

If Hansen and Johnson just faze out and don't do much than the FF role will certainly become a rotational sought of position. Haynes, Cox/Seaby (starting on the bench), Gardiner, McDougall and Lynch (starting on the bench) will all spend some time during a game at FF I'd say.

In summary:

it'll either be:
FB: Glass
CHB: Staker/Lynch
Third tall: Hunter
Ruck: Gardiner
CHF: McDougall
FF: Johnson/Hansen or rotational between Haynes, McDougall, Gardiner, Cox/Seaby and Lynch with no third tall forward.
Third tall: Haynes
Bench: Cox/Seaby and Staker/Lynch

And if Gaspar comes in than he'll be one of the first pick and someone will just have to make way. He'd most probably be CHB, with one of Staker and Lynch on the bench and the other most probably would be put on the AFL scrapheap. Gaspar would also be likely to rotate through CHF with McDougall moving to FF with Staker/Lynch moving to CHB at times during games in the future.

*This depends on how Seaby comes through - if we have three ruckman of good ability, one of the lesser ones will certainly be traded.

RE: Gaspar

Good to see Brauny give his sponsor player a plug into today's West.

"Sometimes you need to give your body time to rest.

"Travis Gaspar is an extremely hard worker because he wants to succeed but sometimes you can push your body a bit too hard and you get these slight soft tissue injuries."

Gaspar, who has been plagued by soft tissue and stress-related injuries, is in a rehabilitation program for stress fractures in a foot. The Eagles rate him as one of their best young key position prospects and his return to the team would be a big bonus in the run to the finals.

Gaspar trains hard on the track, should he train harder in the weights session?

That is incredible faith by Woosha concerning Gaspar, perhaps he sees a work ethic that any coach would love. A young player, turning 23, hard done at the moment, trains hard, dedicated and courageous, hallmarks of a big pay off?

Even though we are doing well with Haynes as FF, do u reckon we will eventually place a tall key position player there eventually?

I dread this year's draft if we draft another tall player because I feel sorry for their chances in the spine.

Although another fast paced midfielder would be great as a back pocket rebounding defender.

On Gassy, a large proportion of young talls go through these periods, where they perpetually injure themselves. The hamstrings and the foot injuries seem to be symptomatic of young guys developing fast and working hard.

The thing is, aside from the injuries, there isn't really a lot to fault about Gaspar's game- when he gets out on the park, he certainly isn't a raw newbie- he's clearly quality, and he slots right in. The situation he is in was sort of similar to Wirrpunda's at the start of this year- clearly classy, but just couldn't string games together.

Right now it appears (touch lots and lots of wood) that Wirra has finally got through that difficult stage, and is now stringing together a lot of good footy- it just seems as though he's outgrown his problems, and if Wirra can just stay fit for the rest of this year and then get in a full pre season, we might see the best of him next year.

Gaspar is sort of in the same boat as Wirra was- wonderful potential, quality contributor but perpetually injured. You'd expect him to grow out of it, hopefully sooner rather than later- if he gets to 25 without really having put together a quality season, then others may pass him by.
