St Kilda complain about priority draft access in Oct 2024; now set to gain priority access to a first / second round pick via their NGA access

Nepo's trying to burn little Aussie battlers for being linked, thats right, LINKED, to something they have abused since inception!

Shocked to be reading this!
Mate, I can’t even keep up with the Nepo poster.

His POV around academies previously was we (Saints supporters) shouldn’t complain about the accumulative list concessions Gold Coast receive primarily the academy FRPs without paying fair value, and now his whole POV is Saints are apparently rorting it with a 2RP (probably the highest we’ve had in how many years with the academies, after previously being declined access at all i.e., McKenzie).

One of his rebuttals was priority picks that Saints received in the early 2000s which every club received under mandatory and universal priority pick policies.

And, he’s still debating that Bassat’s gripe is just having academies in general when it’s well documented that it’s the paying fair value aspect, as clearly Saints are a rebuilding club that can’t get any high end talent through the door due to a compromised draft, not competitive in an open market, free agency, no go home factor, can’t get father sons exacerbated by inter-generational inequities etc, and stuck in the poverty trap of the AFL which limits their talent attraction/growth.

And, then there’s this nuffy’s argument that Melbourne clubs don’t invest in academies, but is happy to be the beneficiary of AFL’s redistributed millions per year funding to their own academy, with access to one of the largest zones in Australia, and that’s before we get started on the ambassadorial money they receive which will now eventually result in Bing ultimately going to Collingwood of all clubs.

You couldn’t make this stuff up.

StonesThrow pointed out the Michalanney example and I provided the Kako example from last year.

Did those bids take out their 1st rounders?

No they didnt. They traded out to advantage and used later picks to pay for a decent 1st rounder.

Saints will do the same if their 1st pick say pick 5 or 6 is threatened.

The same thing Gold Coast does most years to advantage.

So because we are going to get some flukey mid 20s NGA pick we should stop complaining about Gold Coasts multiple top 20 picks every year?

Ok

Exactly. The journo's who are running this angle look like total gooses.

Its not hypocritical if a club finally gets a break after the AFL changes the rules to make access fairer for all clubs.

What do the idiots expect?

Saints: "Yer nah. We are good down at the bottom still and just put up watching our picks get diluted assisting teams that no longer need it."

NGA criteria is stupid. Should only be if both parents are not from Australia.
I am not even sure you have to prove it. All you need to do is tick a box on your junior club registration that says you are aboriginal or have a parent born overseas.
I did this for my son earlier this year out of curiosity and the very next day an invite came to join a club NGA.

Agreed. Who was the last legitimate gun Collingwood actually drafted that wasn't father son or academy?
It's difficult when you don't have any top 10 draft picks.
But looking at the team, guys who were drafted and have been strong senior players include:

Murphy (unfortunately had to retire due to concussion 12 months ago)
McCreery
Maynard
Mihocek
DeGoey
Pendlebury
Sidebottom
Langdon (retired early)
Elliot
Josh Daicos was a pick in the 50s

And those we traded:
Beams
John Noble
Oliver Henry who wanted to go back to Geelong
Grundy (2x AA)
Stephenson won the Rising Star and we traded him a couple of years later.

So, not too bad considering the draft capital we have had over the past number of years.

Also, if we weren't getting Nick Daicos, I doubt we would have traded our 1st for a couple of 2nd round picks. That would have been pick 2 so we could have picked up any of:

JHF
Daicos
Darcy
Callaghan
Wanganeen-Milera
Mac Andrew

Wow that's worse than I thought it would be.

This is a similar scenario to Geelong and their NGA prospect Jessie Mellor this year.
What about David Rodan's son for next season? He needs to make a decision whether he nominates Port as a Father/Son or Essendon as NGA.

Well, you obviously dont rate premiership teams.
Unfortunately, the price you pay for playing regular finals footy.

I rate premiership sides. It doesn't mean your drafting hasn't been below par. Your trading has been great and the father sons have helped a heap.

Apart from JDG, Pendlebury and Stephenson, none of the others were top 10 picks.
I would have thought, apart from 1 season, we tend to get our top 10 picks right. In this case, it was Pendlebury and JDG.

In terms of FS that club's thought were top 10 worthy, it's Moore and Nick Daicos.

is not on players, parents or clubs tho, this mess is brought on by the incompetent fools in afl house.

Going back a long way with Pendles and Sidey. Truth is the list over the last 10 years other than FS and academy picks is not great.

It's an argument that doesn't make sense.
If you don't have a father/son or academy player, you don't trade your high picks.

We had pick 2 for Nick Daicos. If FS didn't exist, we probably would have used it on him anyway. Or we would have taken Darcy, JHF, Callaghan etc. So that was irrelevant.

We really only have 2 FS who other clubs wanted on draft night.

The rest of the draft picks we have had we used to either bring in players (such as Treloar) or 2nd round picks with a number being relatively successful.

I wish we had the top 10 picks that the Bulldogs have had. I think we've shown we tend to pick well when we have had them.

Take out your top 10 picks and FS and how does your record look over the past 10 years?

Wilkie Sinclair Marshall Sharman all rookies.

Conveniently left out Norf with Sanders lol
Sanders was a late hail mary by North. Different to most NGA kids who spent years in the NGA system.

Every club has rookies or mid-season draft picks who have become established players.

What about the rest of the team?
You haven't played much finals footy, and your list looks a concern.
Apart from Wanganeen-Milera, can't say you have utilised your draft picks well.
Or, your club has been poor at developing these kids.

Every one of those players would be walk-up starts at St Kilda.

Not true.

Pou
Wilson
King
All going to be extremely good.

You went out and spent 1.7 mill on two players while StKilda went to the draft and got Tauru and Trav
