St Kilda complain about priority draft access in Oct 2024; now set to gain priority access to a first / second round pick via their NGA access

Every club has rookies or mid-season draft picks who have become established players.

What about the rest of the team?
You haven't played much finals footy, and your list looks a concern.
Apart from Wanganeen-Milera, can't say you have utilised your draft picks well.
Or, your club has been poor at developing these kids.
I put it down to very average coaching/development of players when you look through our history of draft mistakes all the players picked were taken with picks relative to were they were rated at the time it’s not like we were reaching for players .

Probably some truth to this. That 2017 draft would sting a bit for Saints supporters.

It's the two unknowns right now - what will Fincher's value be in October and where will St Kilda finish in August / September? This is why it can be really difficult to plan for these situations a year or two out.
Wow. It sounds like these NGA picks have caused real problems for teams.

St Kilda should do the right thing and not draft any NGAs or father sons if it’s such a big issue plaguing the league. They’ve got to take the principled stance otherwise what is all the whinging about.

But alas, I’m sure now that the Saints are benefiting old Fred Bassett won’t be running around on all fours in front of the Commission telling cringe jokes like he did last year.

They were available for all clubs to recruit and unavailable to us if they were picked by another club in the top 30.
A real gift.
If your club was given priority access to a player and said player becomes a handy footballer, then people are going to complain regardless of the circumstances. I've seen people complain about the Pies having priority access to pick 57 Josh Daicos and Brisbane having priority access to pick 61 Harris Andrews. The same logic can be applied to St Kilda's NGA picks Owens and Windhager.

Except the difference is Owens and Windy were available in the open draft to any club that rated them highly enough. The other two examples are of players whose clubs priority access to them no matter where a bid was placed.

As the saying goes.

If you can't beat them.

Join them.

So one reason Northern academies were allowed was no father sons available to the Suns and Giants for some time.

And yet the Lions pick up two top 3 mids as father sons on top of access to academy kids who have no choice but to play for the Lions if they want to get drafted.

So Lions fans should just continue enjoying access assistance it doesn't need until it stops. Again.

Academy kids can tell their respective club that they don’t want them to draft them, similar to how some Vic draftees tell interstate clubs not to draft them. Make an appealing case to the young lads.

lol oh dear. Brain dead

Yes. But you matched bids on them. If they weren’t NGA, Owens would be playing for the Swans and Windhager would be at Geelong.

NGA definitely didn’t work out for those 2 kids….

What are you on about? Owen’s and Windhager weren’t available to other clubs because you matched bids on them.

And Collingwood will always be treated with advantagious fixturing and little travel.

Which is a big reason they attract so many free agents and trades. Favourable fixturing and little travel.

You come across as an arrogant Pies supporter. Nothing more.
This is it 99% of Collingwood fans... probably resides in Mill Park and thanks the non existent deity he doesn't live Smith St.

Who's Key Defender?

I'm not going to blame my club as that deal was done prior to him coming. Whilst it doesn't happen to all clubs, it happened to us as Fabian Francis wanted his Mini to get around Elizabeth in style.
Ohh Magoo McKay. The bloke we got pick 3 for?

No buyers remorse being suffered at Tullamarine, none at all. I'd say that trade is up with the Bell or Carey trade of getting gross overs, not just a little bit over but GROSS, history making overs. Probably ranks as our greatest bit of work since attaining Byron for a free petrol card/Carey and Longmire for $10k.

As I was saying, the question you have to ask yourself is; Are Norf closer to #3 than we are to #4 in the Big League?

Hopefully you're around to see Carey's kids so we can compare father sons... for some reason our hard men of the 90's are having heaps of girls, perhaps we'll have to wait for the 2nd round of marriages!

They’re the myths …. But here are the facts that explode those myths -
“… a proper examination of the fixture shows that a number of Melbourne clubs have exactly the same travel burden as the Pies, and most who have worse have chosen to take games elsewhere:

• Carlton – 6 matches outside the greater Melbourne area
• Collingwood – 6 matches outside the greater Melbourne area
• Essendon – 6 matches outside greater Melbourne area
• Geelong – 6 matches outside greater Melbourne area
• Richmond – 6 matches outside greater Melbourne area
• Melbourne – 7 matches outside greater Melbourne area (including home game taken to NT)
• Western Bulldogs 7 matches outside greater Melbourne area (including 1 home game taken to Ballarat)
• St Kilda – 7 matches outside greater Melbourne area
• Hawthorn – 10 matches outside greater Melbourne area (including 4 games sold to Tasmania)
• North Melbourne – 10 matches outside greater Melbourne area (including 2 home games taken to Hobart, 2 home games taken to WA, and a Hawks home game in TAS) …”

Outside greater Melbourne area.

So a trip to Perth is identical to a trip to Adelaide?

Well, if it’s to play West Coast, then obviously it’s a lot easier than a trip to Adelaide!

Unfortunately, the Pies didn’t have such luck this year or last, having to make do with only beating Freo in Perth, because they weren’t gifted the advantage of playing the Eagles twice.

Given the AFL runs a completely fair and transparent competition with a full justification on how GC, Brisbane, GWS and Sydney get preferential access to players in their NGAs.

I'm looking forward to Hawthorn getting similar treatment with access to a rare NGA selection this draft in Oliver Greeves.
