What is it with lazy SOB's who when they get on an escalator or the travelator whatchamacallit they just stand there like its a ride or something, there should be a sign at the top and bottom saying stand to the left if you are a lazy bastard who wants a ride. In England and over Europe you must stand to the left, i get sick of trying to get through all these tossers to comatose to put one foot in front of the other

Wouldnt they just have stairs for the people who want to walk?

Exactly, but saying that I always stay to the left for people who want to walk, occassionally I am in a hurry & walk up them too.

This annoys me, too. But it's not just on escalators. It's on stairs and also just general footpaths and walkways as well. Why can't everyone just keep to the left at all times? It makes it a lot easier when there are a lot of people around if everyone does this.

Isn't there some sort of unwritten courtesy rule about standing to one side on escalators to allow people to walk past if they want to?

Maybe some of the people are closet yanks therefore they stick to the right rather than the left.

Been to Hong Kong a few times recently and I tell you what. Their rules are very clear. Stand to the left or be bowled over for being stupid.

Yet in a city like London they can get it right, you'd be pushed over if you stood on the escalator on the left hand side.

I stand still most of the time. They are designed to carry people up there. If you were meant to walk, they wouldn't move!
It's so people with lots of bags/heavy items can get up there easily enough.

I think they need to move faster then. Some escalators move so slowly that you just have to walk or you would die of boredom waiting to get to the top/bottom.

Yeah, I stand if I'm not in a hurry...but usually figure it's better to get some exercise while I'm there! :p Plus....if it's not peak hour at any of the city train stations, those things move as slow as all hell, and I can't stand just standing there.

Singapore: Get fined.

That's one of the things that really strikes you about Europe. Not just escalators either but also walking on the footpath. You get some very strange looks if you don't keep to one side.

Here in the US I've seen plenty of people get yelled at or gently shoved if they don't move to the right. Personally, it doesn't really bother me if it takes me an extra 10 seconds to get up an elevator.

Like the ones at Melb central?
They are so big, they take ages to get to the top, during peak hours they need a faster speed to get people through that area quicker.

I use Melb Central, and they're a bitch. Would hate to have to use Parliament every day though - they're just plain scary! Long AND steep! :(

Melbourne Central's OK of a morning because of the two lifts both going up on Platforms 1 & 2. As for people getting in the road, a firm "excuse me" usually works for me, but I thank those who move. As for those who don't, they usually get an apology as my briefcase or sportsbag whacks into them...accidently, naturally.

My parents stand still

All you have to say is, "Hey mate, could you just move to the left??"
When they move you say, "Cheers"

Its not hard people! ;)

Not when theres ten of them in the way. One day Im just going to close my eyes and run through

The weird thing about London is that you have to stand on the RIGHT on escalators.

Considering they drive on the left, I don't understand why this is...

My response to people like this is to ask them to move. You'd be amazed what happens when you open your mouth.

If that doesn't work (usually with sanctimonious mothers who think because they've managed to spawn they are exempt from usual public decency) then I shove.
