I seen Stanley in a nab cup game and he instantly reminded me of Scotty Russel. I guess i must have seen it through my eyelids, people don't seem to think to much of him. Cook is as slow in the mind as he is on his feet, i don't expect to much from him other than to be delisted at the end of 09'.

voted for stanley as I think 09 is going to be the year he breaks through. He has to or else he's out. But the main reason I think he will is because he's physically prepared for AFL level than Beams. Inside midfielders require the right balance of strength, endurance and speed and its difficult to get right. They do take time and I think after three years he should be ready. Beams still has to go through that physical preparation.

Add to that Stanley has been mucked about. He's in and then he's out the following week. He's in the backline and yet we've spent years preparing him as a midfielder. He needs MM to persist with him and give him a number of games in a row to see whether he's up to it. Give him a chance to adjust to AFL level footy. Best of luck to him and Cook as they need 09 to be a big year for them.

Yep feel we have to play Stanners in the centre from NAB Rd 1 and see what happens.

If he goes well he will get a gig Round , and hopefully consolidate. If he doesn't he might struggle to get another chance.

Ryan Cook is coming along ok for mine - if anyone is on a Dane Swan type upward projectory he is.

^^ yep I'll be very perplexed if he's not in the middle for every practice and NAB game. If he's not it shows the powers to be don't have the confidence in him and he'll really struggle.
Strongly agreed.

I haven't watched Stanley at VFL level but he always seems to get mowed down in AFL, sluggish and with no peripheral awareness. That's why he never seems to string a few together. But since so many rate him, I'm happy for him to be given a proper run in NAB.

Cook looks to me to be a bit panicky. I'm 50/50 on him, but when I've seen Wellingham and J Mac they have had nice composure. Their touches have been of good quality, si I expect bigger things from them.

Finally re Beams, his weight is light but his frame looks strong to me. Have to reserve judgment until he plays obvioulsy, but would also like to see him given a go in 2008 and NAB if goes alright in scratch and practice matches.

From AFL only form I rate your summary old spice. I think with Stanley it is just a matter of adjusting to the speed of the game going up. He also has a bit of a stigma from that carlton game. His kicking is actually good, but in an O'Bree manner he is rushed at AFL level. His awareness is very good at VFL level and hopefully that translate. His ability to get a tough ball and fire out a quick handpass to a player is very good.

Cook for mine needs to become a small defender or tagger. If Stanley doesn't make it there is no way Cook will IMO. His kicking is worse. He offers much less in terms of ball winning ability and I actually thought he was very outside up until this year. His pace is not great etc. If his in direct competition with Stanley for an inside mid possie then his miles off. I don't see him being good enough or us needing him in an inside outside link role, we have enough of these players who are established and better. Which leaves some form of defensive role.

On Wellingham and J-Mac. I don't think either of them are ready enough to be a real inside ball winner for us which is what leaves the door open for Stanley. J-Mac may well be long term but is not developed enough at this stage. Shaz is unlikely to ever be a true inside player, whilst good in that area. The reason both of those look so much more comfortable is because they have the pace and class to look at home at AFL level when in space. They are quick and classy players.

Stanley has never looked classy and if he was not such a bull I would have no doubts about writting him off. I think everyone should reserve a bit of judgement till (if) he gets a chance in the midfield. His work around the stoppages is very good. A guy like Cross for example came on late and wouldn't be an impressive player if he wasn't winning the ball.

Stanley should be given first crack as he has a stronger more mature body and VFL experience.

However, Stanley really needs to show that he is a more than competent inside mid to retain his spot on the list. With competition from McCarthy, Beams etc. he has to step up. So far he has been absolutley terrible at AFL level, I think that unfortunatley he will be a good VFL player who is never able to make the transiton to AFL.

I would be very surprised if both Cook and Stanley were at Collingwood in 2010.

If Beams is not a better prospect than Stanley, then his was a completely wasted pick. A 2nd rounder in such a strong draft should be much better than Danny Stanley. Stanley is a very good VFL player but a very poor AFL player. Some supporters don't understand that playing great at VFL level means nothing when it comes to success at AFL level.

Sharrod Wellingham is a prime example. Stanley was clearly more consistant and dominant at VFL level than Wellingham, but I'll give you one guess on who looked the better prospect. Wellingham shows far more class and potential, despite dominating less. And he will prove to be a far better AFL player. Stanley has zero awareness, ala Richard Cole, and is an extremely poor decision maker under pressure ala Julian Rowe. I don't care if he has the kicking skills of Buckley and the toughness of Matthews, he won't make it at AFL level lacking in those attributes. And they aren't attributes players simply acquire, or can develop quickly, they are more ones you are born with.
