Percentage of Rounds in Portions
of the Ladder in Different Eras

• From 1997 the Swans have been in the top 8 on the ladder after a completed round of matches more than any other club. In the same period they have been placed in the bottom 4 on the ladder after a completed round of matches, fewer times than any other club.

• The results this year saw the Cats replace the Eagles in 4th place on an all-time table of percentage of rounds placed in the top 4.

• After the Cats, the Bulldogs have spent the least time in the bottom 4 places on the ladder in the last 5 seasons. (Two clubs were never there.)

• In the last 5 seasons with the exception of the Suns, only one club has never been at least once in a top 4 position after a completed round of matches.

• In their first season, the Suns never placed higher than 13th on the ladder after a completed round of matches. Only one club failed to be placed at least once in the top 4 in their first 5 seasons and 8 current clubs made the top 4 on the ladder after a completed round of matches fewer times than did the Students in their first 5 seasons.

It's happened once, 100 years ago, in the embryonic days of coaching. The coaches of the top 6 teams in the last game of 1910 had all changed by Round 1, 1912.

1st Collingwood - Angus to McHale
2nd Carlton - Elliott to Clark
3rd South Melbourne - Thomas to Ricketts
4th Essendon - Belcher to Worrall
5th Geelong - Hickinbotham to Eason
6th University - Grace to Brosnan

Nearly happened twice in the 70's/80's, when five of the top six changed within the same time span.

With Hall, Fevola and Bradshaw falling by the wayside, there are currently no active 500-goal players for the first time since 1978, when Kevin Bartlett began the year on 462.

Hawks v Swans: Only finals matches ever played where no behinds were scored in the 2nd quarter.

Carlton's record in finals outside of Victoria is now 0 wins and 6 losses.

Of the remaining finalists:

Collingwood has the lowest percentage from their last six matches.

West Coast has won the highest percentage of first quarters.

Collingwood has won the highest percentage of second quarters.

Geelong has won the highest percentage of third quarters.

Geelong has won the highest percentage of last quarters.

Pre the 2011 Preliminary Finals.

• The only time in the history of the final 8 that all 4 Preliminary Finalists have won 7 of their last 8 matches.

• 2011 is the only year where all 4 Preliminary Finalists had a for and against percentage of 140% or more from their last 8 matches.

• Of 18 teams that went into the Preliminary Final with 7 wins from their last 8 matches, 6 went on to be Premiers.

• Since the 1978 Qualifying final, Collingwood has played 46 finals (25 wins, 19 losses, 2 draws) and Hawthorn 47 finals (29 wins, 18 losses) without managing to meet each other again until 2011.

• Hawthorn first beat Collingwood in 3 consecutive matches round 13 1960, round 11 1961 and round 2 1962. Prior to those matches, Hawthorn had a total of 3 wins from 60 meetings with Collingwood - 1925-60. From round 13 1960, Hawthorn has won 53 of 91 matches v Collingwood.

• West Coast has had finals match-ups against 11 teams. Of those 11 teams, Geelong is only one not to have defeated the Eagles at least once in a final.

• At the time of their 1994 Grand Final loss to West Coast, Geelong's record against the Eagles was 4 wins and 14 losses. Since then, their record is 16 wins, 8 losses and 1 draw.

The second last ever old-style Second Semi Final, a game Geelong lost on every occasion from 1980 to 1992 (Four).

North Melbourne i believe never won a Second Semi, as they lost in 1949 to Essendon, and managed to win their way through to the Grand Final the hard way in the Preliminary final all throughout the 70's. Lost in 1983 as well. Think that made them 0-8 in that particular game!!

Collingwood v Hawthorn

• Only the 4th final won by winning only the last quarter.

• Only the 2nd match ever lost by Hawthorn where they won the first 3 quarters.

Geelong v West Coast.

• Of West Coast's 11 finals opponents, Geelong is the last to win a final against the Eagles.

• Geelong surpassed Collingwood as the highest scoring team this season during this match - 2,763 (115.1 average) - Collingwood 2,742 (114.25 average.)

Collingwood v Geelong now will have the highest number of finals match-ups of any two teams – 23.

Yep, hence why North in the 70s were regarded as preliminary final specialists.

North also made seven prelims in a row from 1994-2000 but lost four of them- they only emerged victorious in 1996, 1998 and 1999.
