e.g. Adelaide has played 486 games and has had more cumulative points for than against after 269 of those games; they currently have 45658 points for and 43865 against (aggregate +1793); and the last time they were in deficit was Round 17, 2002.

Interesting points are that Collingwood and Essendon have never been in deficit, and that only 6 of 19 clubs are currently in the black, with Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon and Geelong all showing a massive surplus.

I trust RogersResults will correct any of the above if incorrect. ;)

Another take on these can be found here.

(With some minor discrepancies!)

Also on the page is a table of progressive m/w% - high/low after 10 seasons.

Geelong, Hawthorn and St Kilda are the only teams currently on their best ever M/W% after more than 10 seasons in the competition.

Find it interesting that Fitzroy managed to be in the black for almost 2/3 of their history (1261/1928 matches).

Essendon, Geelong, Collingwood and Carlton are miles ahead of anyone! Indeed, the only Victorian clubs with a positive points record. Richmond and Hawthorn aren't too far off joining them in the black though, if they have a good few years.

At the end of 1925 when Fitzroy had their greatest points surplus (4,183), they led the Premiership table with 7 flags to Essendon's 6 and were second only to Collingwood in percentage of matches won - 61.1% to 65.58%.

Fitzroy at that stage had won 65.79% of their finals matches compared to Collingwood's 41.86%.

In those days nobody would have picked them to be the one to one day drop out of the competition.

Only four AFL clubs have played in more than 50 finals series.

Collingwood: 78 – Won 45.38% of matches.
Carlton: 67 – Won 47.35% of matches.
Essendon: 63 – 54.69% of matches.
Geelong: 51 – Won 46.26% of matches.

At no stage at the end of a finals series has Collingwood had a cumulative total of more wins than losses in finals matches. After winning the 1903 Grand Final, Collingwood was equal on finals wins (5) and finals losses (5). Since then, at the end of every finals series they have had a cumulative total of more losses than wins.

Carlton, after winning the 1906 Grand Final had won 4 of 7 finals played up to then. Thereafter they were ahead in finals won until losing the Semi-Final in 1927, which put them on 19 wins and losses from 38 finals played. Since then at the end of each finals series, their total finals losses have out numbered their finals wins

Only at the end of the 1910 season has Essendon had a cumulative total of more finals losses than wins - 9 losses to 8 wins. Since then Essendon has maintained a cumulative surplus of finals wins over finals losses at the end of each finals series.

Geelong was ahead in wins after their first finals series in 1897 and then even in wins and losses after the 1901 series. Since then they have had a negative balance – the lowest point being 1923 with a m/w% of 22.1% – their highest since then is their current 46.26%.

Series where all finals were won:

Collingwood: 5 (6.4%) - 1903, 1910, 1927, 1936 and 1953 In their other 10 Premiership years they have lost or drawn a match during the finals. - 6 of Collingwood's flags have been won with the 'double chance'.

Carlton: 12 (17.9%) - 1906-8, 1915, 1938, 1945, 1947, 1968, 1979, 1981, 1987, 1995. In their other 4 Premiership years they have lost or drawn a match during the finals - 4 of Carlton's flags have been won with the 'double chance'. (In 1972 lost 1 and drew 1 final.)

Essendon: 10 (15.9%) - 1897, 1901, 1911-2, 1949-50, 1962, 1965, 1985, 2000. In their other 6 Premiership years they have lost or drawn a match during the finals - 4 of Essendon's flags have been won with the 'double chance'.

Geelong: 7 (13.7%) – 1937, 1951, 1952, 1963, 2007, 2009, 2011. In their other 2 Premiership years they lost one match during the finals - 2 of Geelong's flags have been won with the 'double chance'.

Series where all finals were lost:

Collingwood has lost all matches in 31 finals series. (39.7%)
Carlton has lost all matches in 29 finals series. (43.3%)
Essendon has lost all matches in 22 finals series. (34.9%)
Geelong has lost all matches in 18 finals series. (35.3%)

....

Essendon: 10 (15.9%) - 1897, 1901, 1911-2, 1949-50, 1962, 1965, 1985, 1993, 2000. In their other 6 Premiership years they have lost or drawn a match during the finals - 4 of Essendon's flags have been won with the 'double chance'.

...

Essendon lost a final in 1993 (Qualifying final to Caaaarlton), so you'll need to remove that from that list!

True fact. The 'baby' Bombers snuck in the list. When you're not getting paid to do something, once the initial interest in the first revelation of the facts is gone, checking things is sometimes too much of a chore. My apologies.

Bombers still (with the exception of the 1972-82 consecutive Waverly quick exits) seem to have the most successful finals culture of the four.

Opponents undefeated in the Last Three Seasons – 2009-11.

4 teams have defeated all opponents at least once.

8 teams have been defeated by all opponents at least once.

Collingwood has 6 opponents that haven’t defeated them – Geelong and St Kilda 5 each.

Melbourne has 7 opponents that they haven’t been able to defeat and Richmond has 6.

The longest any team has currently gone without defeating a particular opponent at least once is Richmond v St Kilda – not since round 4 2003.

Re: The '6' stats, are Collingwood the only club to feature in all the last 6 finals series?

Yes.

Finals series between 2006-11:

Collingwood- 6
Geelong- 5 (missed 2006)
St Kilda- 5 (missed 2007)
Sydney- 5 (missed 2009)
Adelaide-4 (missed 2010-11)
Footscray- 4 (missed 2007, 2011)
Hawthorn- 4 (missed 2006, 2009)
Carlton- 3 (missed 2006-08)
West Coast- 3 (missed 2008-10)
Essendon- 2 (missed 2006-08, 2010)
North Melbourne- 2 (missed 2006, 2009-11)
Fremantle- 2 (missed 2007-09, 2011)
Brisbane- 1 (missed 2006-08, 2010-11)
Port Adelaide- 1 (missed 2006, 2008-11)
Melbourne- 1 (missed 2007-11)
Richmond- 0
Gold Coast- 0

Collingwood missed the finals in 2005, so no side has made the past seven finals series. The last side to manage a streak of seven finals series in a row is Essendon, between 1998 and 2004. You would imagine, barring catastrophic events, that Collingwood will equal that next year!

Amazing stat, Wade was always a burly looking player who was taller than average as well in his time. But one thing will be for certain, Ling is in no danger of having Doug Wade's hair genetics pass on i think!!:thumbsu:

Just out of curiosity, for how long have you been lying in wait for a stat such as this to emerge?

Here's an interesting fact or two.

The lowest amount of VFL/AFL games played that a career hasn't ended on is 214. In other words, at least one player has had their career end on every game number between 1 and 213.

The next lowest figure after that is 284. In other words, at least one player has had their career end on every game number between 215 and 283.

After that, the numbers become much more frequent. No one's career has yet ended with the following number of games next to their name:

214, 284, 287, 295, 296*, 298, 299, 308-310, 314-317, 319, 322, 326, 327, 330, 331, 334, 335, 337-340, 342-346, 347*, 348, 349, 351-355, 357, 358, 360-363, 365, 367-374, 376, 377, 379-382, 384-402, 404-425 and anything beyond 426.

*indicates current player is on this amount of games at present. Namely, Simon Black on 296 and Dustin Fletcher on 347.

The equivalent for goals is 196.

Gives you a different perspective when you realise that sometimes-maligned players like Kent Kingsley and Quentin Lynch are among the top 2% and are actually quite exceptional.

Kingsley was a good player for Geelong. Four-time club leading goalkicker and I think at one stage he was leading the Coleman approximately two-thirds of the way through the season.
