Still, if you are going to document a progressive ladder, it's hard to include matches not having been played. So my 1903 ladders don't.
Also Rds 14-15, 1935 and Rds 16-17, 1987 required some fiddling, and 1982 also had match brought forward.
 
OBSERVED IN ROUND 14 2012

  • So far Hawthorn have their highest average winning margin since 1991.
  • Fremantle became just the 3rd team to score 10 goals 0 behinds in a half.
  • Richmond's highest 1st quarter margin over Adelaide.
  • Gold Coast's 12th loss in all 4 quarters. (6 in 2011, 6 in 2012.)
  • Essendon's 3rd biggest win in their last 150 matches.
  • Sydney's 3rd biggest win in their last 150 matches.
  • Geelong has had a higher percentage of their wins leading each quarter than they did last year.
  • The 5th time Melbourne have had their scored doubled this year.
  • The first time Nth Melbourne have scored a century v St Kilda in 11 matches.

At Round 14 2012:

23.93% of scores (56) have had fewer than 20 scoring shots.
The last time there was a higher percentage was in 1967 - 30.36%
20 of the scores with fewer than 20 scoring shots have been by GWS (12) and Gold Coast (8).
Essendon, Richmond, St Kilda and Sydney have had none.

Essendon and Sydney have each kept 6 opponents to fewer that 20 scoring shots.

Carlton, Fremantle, Geelong and Melbourne have each won a match with fewer than 20 scoring shots. (There were 6 matches won with fewer than 20 scoring shots in 2011. There were 10 in 2005 and 0 in 2000.)
 
At Round 14 2012:

63.25% of matches have been wins with the winning team leading at each quarter break.
This is the highest percentage since 63.78% in 1995 and the 5th highest recorded.

Only higher have been:
1906: 71.83%
1897: 67.74%
1898: 67.145

The lowest was 39.47% in 1922.

In 2011 it was 53.57%

In 2012 Sydney have won 9 matches leading at each quarter break. Collingwood 8.
GWS have lost 10 matches trailing at each quarter break. Gold Coast and Melbourne 8 each.

Collingwood, Hawthorn, Sydney and West Coast have each lost 1 match trailing at each quarter break.

Interesting. The career tallies of the older players tally with Paul's numbers, but the stat quoted in the text for Williams (avg 15.37 handballs after 193 games) doesn't agree (15.46).

Years ago I emailed Cameron Sinclair about obtaining historical player stats; his reply implied that the AFL had their own copy of these unofficial numbers.

The article's announcement of Cross as a record-breaker is pretty moot since it's based on a snapshot in time; his future numbers will probably lower his career average.

I noticed when Ablett equalled Williams' disposal record, they were quoting the Featherby total that I have (48), when it's usually given as 51. So I'd say it that was also coming from me. Which is a little worrying, obviously I have zero official standing, and shouldn't be confused as having so.
And even though have a disclaimer at the end of article, it is on the official website.

Heh, sorry.. strictly non-commercial. Over the years, when people have asked for data, some have mentioned payment, but I don't work that way.
Even Champion Data contacted me recently.. they were a little vague about what they wanted, but when I explained my non-commercial stance, they wandered off.

Still, if someone offered a million, I'd consider it :) That would induce down trickle down - first cab off the rank would be Bigfooty member Donners, who did an unbelievalbe amount of work.

Wonder if they were sussing out whether you were profiting from what is essentially their data since 1993(?).
 
If so, it would have been needlessly circumlocutory... if they were concerned they could've just said "Step off" as the Herald Sun did. I think they were after the pre-93 or whenever player stats. Kudos to them for asking, they or anyone can just take them anyway.

Observed in round 15 2012:

  • The 5,000th quarter won by Carlton.
  • The equal most 2 point margins in a season since 1999.
  • The first time the score of 13.23 was registered it was by Melbourne v Richmond.
  • The number of drawn last quarters are now equal to the most in a complete season.
  • St Kilda's average score is their highest since 2004.
  • Port Adelaide's average score is currently their lowest on record.
  • Hawthorn broke an obscure record held by Geelong since 1934.
  • Gold Coast's highest losing scores have been against Hawthorn and Geelong.
  • The Docker's got their 5,000th goal and the Bulldogs their 22,000th behind.

Here's how GWS rates using the formula - points scored-points conceded/matches played which compensates for the lower percentages prevalent in lower scoring eras when it was easier to multiply an opponent's score by factors of 2 or more.

They have been more savage on their fellow cellar dwellers than many of their 'betters'.
Back in 1925 when the three new teams were not doing very well, as a joke the media temporarily resurrected the term abandoned by the League some 20 years previously, 'minor premiers' for the best of the bottom three.
Brisbane would be a worthy recipient of the title this year as the best of the bottom third.
