Waiting for a one point Freo win tomorrow.

In 2008, there were 49 occasions in which the score of 105 occurred be it final score or score progression.

And this is excluding the NAB Cup and the Dream team game.

Pretty remarkable isn't it!

Commencing with the 1987 Rd 22 game at Skilled, and taking it up to the Rd 4 2007 game against Hawthorn in Tassie, my memory is that Geelong won just a single game in that period by a margin of 12 points or less against Hawthorn, and that was in 2001 at Docklands when Ronnie Burns kicked a late goal for a 3-point win. Hawthorn in that period (but not in a row) won something like a dozen games by 12 points or less....and i do include the 1988 pre-season Grand Final in that as well. This amazing narrow sequence of wins is inexplicable, can only think it's a sort of 'karma' for those endless narrow Hawk wins over Geelong in that previous time. Except they are happening in in a row now! Can't believe it, but i'll take it!

Last night after watching the Collingwood vs St. Kilda game on telly, I watched a DVD titled The Devil Inside. I have just spent this afternoon listening to the Melbourne vs Gold Coast game where Melbourne attained their third highest disposal count for the season. Thus I was entertained in two different formats relating to demon possessions.

Observed in Round 19 2012
  • Geelong break a streak that was their longest since 1967-8.

  • Collingwood's most wins by by a goal or less in their last 20 seasons.
  • Richmond set a League record.
  • One of only 5 matches were a team leading by 40 or more pts. at quarter time only outscored their opponent by 2 points in the rest of the match.
  • The Swans having a 33% better match/win percentage from their 50 matches v Carlton since moving to Sydney than there last 50 matches against the Blues while they were still based in Melbourne.
  • A coincidence in Essendon losing after only losing the 3rd quarter of their match.

Great post Ron. Mostly names you would expect because of fringe status (Everitt, Pinnell), repeat offending (Carman) or bad luck with injury (Crosswell, Vidovic). The surprising one for me is Fletcher: 363 games with excellent fitness but has never played a streak longer than a H&A season!

Brownlow medallists who coached subsequent Brownlow medallists.

Haydn Bunton, winner in 1931, 1932 and 1935, coached Dinny Ryan at Fitzroy in 1936.
Dick Reynolds, winner in 1934, 1937 and 1938, coached Bill Hutchison at Essendon in 1952 (retrospective) and 1953.
Herbie Matthews, winner in 1940, coached Fred Goldsmith at South Melbourne in 1955.
Ron Clegg, winner in 1949, coached Bob Skilton at South Melbourne in 1959.
Ian Stewart, winner in 1965, 1966 and 1971, coached two South Melbourne winners in Graham Teasdale (1977) and Barry Round (1981).

Prior to all this, Ivor Warne-Smith, winner in 1926, was Melbourne captain-coach when he won his second Brownlow in 1928.
Allan Hopkins, retrospective winner in 1930, coached Norm Ware at Footscray in 1941.

Buddha's last game as player resulted in a 70 point loss.

His first game as coach resulted in a 72 point loss.

Reverse the number 72 and you get 27, Geelong's score in that game vs Carlton Round 22 2001.
