Observed in Round 2 - 2012 Finals
  • The 85th finals win since 2000 by teams placed higher on the final ladder.
  • Adelaide even up their finals record.
  • Some finals déjà vu for Fremantle.
  • A first for Adelaide.
  • A new low for Football Park.
  • Collingwood and West Coast are neck and neck in overall performance in finals.
  • Since they've been in the competition together, Collingwood have won twice as many matches as West Coast have after losing the first two quarters.

    Details and More:

Matthew Scarlett's recent retirement makes him the first player to finish with a career tally of 284 games. This now means that of all the Games Played totals between 1 and 294, the only totals not yet achieved by any player are 287 and, quite surprisingly, 214.

My 2 favourite stats of the last 5 years continue to endure.

Sydney extends their perfect streak of finishing above Fremantle to 18/18 years since Freo's debut in 1995.
(Freo did finish 3rd to Sydney's 4th in the 2006 H&A, but were beaten by Sydney in a prelim and thus finished lower than Sydney)

Melbourne and Richmond also fail to be in the same finals series for the 71st consecutive season, a rather remarkable feat.

Observed in the Round 3 Finals 2012
  • The Swans failed by 5 points to do to the Magpies what they haven't done to them since 1959.
  • Consistent goal tallies in finals against Collingwood.
  • Attendance milestone for the 'Blood Stained Angels'.
  • The Magpies fall behind the Swans in finals match/win percentage.
  • A 60 year attendance low for Collingwood.
  • Some finals déjà vu for the Crows.
  • A first for Hawthorn and a first for Adelaide.
  • Hawthorn even up their Preliminary Final wins and losses.

Must be a sign of being old....But i recall a North fan student in Year 10 in 1983 having a little dig by saying 'Go North' to teacher Gary Malarkey after Fairley and co smashed Geelong by 40 points at K.P. Promptly told to pipe down by another teacher in earshot mind you. Could hardly imagine a teacher playing footy now, but professionalism has changed so much in this 30 year period.
Not current just purely down to time constraints, but I was taught maths by a former player (of sorts...) AFAIK he's still at the school

Mention has been made that Jobe Watson is the first Essendon player to win a Brownlow since his current coach James Hird did so in 1996. The only other instances of this happening are, firstly, at Fitzroy in 1936, albeit after a very short wait. Dinny Ryan's victory was the first at Fitzroy since coach Haydn Bunton had won the Brownlow the year before. The only other occurrence was also at Essendon when Bill Hucthison tied (as did Hird) in 1952 with Roy Wright, this being the first Essendon Brownlow since coach Dick Reynolds triumphed in 1938. Even though Hutchison at the time was beaten on countback, he won the Brownlow outright the following season and would still fulfil the criteria for this statistic.

Hey Ron, do you work with stats for a living?

How do you keep on reeling off brilliant statistical posts.

You're like a cross between Paul from AFL Tables and RogersResults.

Vic Belcher (1909, 1918) is the only dual premiership player among 1,377 representatives of Sydney/South Melbourne. Tomorrow Jude Bolton, Adam Goodes, Ryan O'Keefe and Lewis Roberts-Thomson have a chance to add their names to an exclusive list.

Birchall, Ellis, Franklin, Gilham, Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell, Rioli, Roughead, Sewell and Young will attempt to add a second flag at Hawthorn.

Grand Final observation

Over the previous four matches before a season decider, Hawthorn's defence has leaked 89 points on average. This is the most by a premier (should they win) since Adelaide of 1998 (also 89 points).

Sydney is averaging 82.

Defences win premierships.

Just saying...

  • Personally I was hoping Lewis Roberts-Thomson would win the Norm Smith medal. It has been 25 years since the last hyphenated named player won a Norm Smith (David Rhys-Jones), and he too played for Sydney, and won his Norm Smith playing against Hawthorn.
  • Had Hawthorn scored one last goal during the final 30 seconds, reducing the margin to 4 points, it would have meant Sydney had won consecutive premierships by the same margin. The only team to do this is Fitzroy when they won their 4th and 5th premierships in 1905 and 1913 by 13 points.

Observations from the result of the final match of 2012
  • The Swans have played 4 times as many Grand Finals in the last 17 seasons as they did in the previous 59.
  • The third Grand Final won by Sydney/SM with fewer scoring shots.
  • Hawthorn's narrowest loss in a Grand Final.
  • The first 1 point quarter by a team in a Grand Final in over half a century.
  • The first and last Grand Finals played by Sydney/SM shared the same feature.
  • A scoring feature seen only once before in a Grand Final since 1990.
  • The uniqueness of the Swan's score.

Grand Final observation

Over the previous four matches before a season decider, Hawthorn's defence has leaked 89 points on average. This is the most by a premier (should they win) since Adelaide of 1998 (also 89 points).

Sydney is averaging 82.

Defences win premierships.

And what did the respective defences concede?

Sydney conceded 81 (compared to that average of 82)
Hawthorn conceded 91 (compared to that average of 89)

The scores were almost exactly consistent with the average from the last four games- quite amazing.

A very astute observation indeed :thumbsu:
