In 2010, Tom McDonald was drafted by Melbourne with pick 53.
In 2014, Tom's brother Oscar McDonald was drafted with pick 53.
Pick 53 belonged to Melbourne.

As of 2015, Tom wears No. 25 and Oscar wears No. 28.

25 + 28 = 53.

WAFL reserves this round (R14, 2015) there were two draws from 4 games. Even more unusual that all 4 teams score the same - 73 points. It was scored in 3 different ways West Perth 11.7 drew Subiaco 10.13 and Peel 11.7 drew Perth 9.19

Yesterday, James Hird said the damnedest thing about Essendon's loss to Hawthorn.

"We had eight guys with under 50 games play in the team. That’s a high percentage. History will tell you if you play seven players or more with under 50 games the chances of winning are very low. You’re almost giving yourself no chance of winning with that amount of players under 50 games."

What sort of arcane research had produced this unique insight?

From 2005-current, the record of teams with 7+ players under 50 games is

P: 2835
W: 1263
L: 1546
D: 26
Win %: 45.01

So at face value, Hirdy's talking shit, unless you consider 45% to be "almost no chance".

Further refining the dataset to matches where both teams had 7+ players under 50, the record of teams with more players under 50 than the opposition is

P: 880
W: 327
L: 546
D: 7
Win %: 37.56

We've taken a bit of a hit, to below Matthew Knights' career strike rate of 38%.

Refining again and looking at the record of teams with 7+ players under 50 v teams with < 7 players, we get

P: 787
W: 248
L: 531
D: 8
Win %: 32.02

Now we've hit the skids - down beneath Essendon's 2015 success rate of 33%. Still, probably more aptly described as a "fighting chance" than "Buckley's", and derived using much stricter conditions than applied by Hird.

While Essendon's 2015 teams have contained between 5-8 players with fewer than 50 games' experience, their teams in Hird's debut season of 2011 which culminated in a finals appearance featured between 8-13 such players.

Was Hirdy just "feeding the chooks" in an effort to ease speculation about his coaching, or does he really believe his own bullshit?

I would say the former. Most things the coaches say is distracting rubbish. You just need to listen to Paul Roos on AFL360.

I reckon Caleb Daniel could sneak in a Brownlow vote from his debut last week against Carlton.
He was subbed on just after half time & was a standout. 54 Fantasy points in less than half a game & was instrumental in staving off a commited Carlton.

As an aside, a few decades earlier, think there is another less than 50% time for a Brownlow vote:
http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/1972/101119720401.html

Peter Hudson 1972 Rnd 1 - Haw vs Melb
8 goals (but off injured before half-time ?) - 1 vote.

That's a very good get - do we know of any other players who received votes in games prior to when the VFL/AFL started vote-counting by round? It would have to be times like Hudson - ie only a singular vote (a 1-, 2-, or 3- vote performance) in a season where they only played one game. or 2x similar, singular votes where they only played 2 games etc.

It was always one of the great imponderables when a dud player from your team got a vote, and you spent hours trying to work out which game he could possibly have got those in!

Hudson also played one game in 1973 Hawthorn vs Collingwood -
he kicked 8 goals - 2 votes in the Brownlow
http://afltables.com/afl/stats/games/1973/041019730825.html

Dick Taylor played three games for Melbourne in 1935 and was awarded a total of 7 votes
http://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/D/Dick_Taylor.html

Therefore, he must have received a 1 vote and two 3's; or a 3 and two 2's.

Another instance worth researching for time spent on the ground would be Jeff Farmer versus Collingwood in round 14, 2000. Not sure whether he was benched during the first or second quarter, but came back on at the six minute mark of the third quarter, after which he booted 9 goals from 14 kicks, receiving 2 Brownlow votes.

I posted this on the Footy History board but 35Daicos suggested that it'd also be worthy of mentioning here too.

Just tonight by chance I stumbled upon the interesting case of Con Molan, a Cats player in the 1900s who has recently been discovered to have played under two names during his career! Those concerned may want to update their records, as Col Hutchison appears to have done.

http://www.geelongcats.com.au/news/2015-03-27/the-cat-of-two-names
I had another matter to raise with the AFL Statistics people recently so asked if they could provide a DoB for Con Molan:- The story of Con Molan (Geelong) was revealed recently:- http://www.geelongcats.com.au/news/2015-03-27/the-cat-of-two-names. It says only that “He was born in October 1886” Do you have an exact DoB for him?

The response (from Steve Rodgers) was:- That Con Molan date-of-birth was 15 October 1886.

An interesting one from the VFL/VFA competition.

Since the end of World War 2 in 1945, a total of 40 teams have played in the VFA/VFL, and only one club has played at least one game against all 39 opponents during this time. This club is Box Hill.

Admitted to the competition with Moorabbin in 1951, it played the clubs existing at the time, including the Brighton Penguins, mid 1950s additions in Dandenong and Mordialloc and when it went to Division 2 in 1962 it played all the new clubs that came in during the 1960s such as Waverley, Geelong West, Caulfield, Werribee and Frankston. Box Hill stayed in Divison 2 until it won the premiership in 1984, and this gave it a chance to meet short-lived Division 2 clubs Kilsyth and Berwick when they commenced in the early 1980s.

Other long-standing clubs that remain today; Sandringham, Port Melbourne, Williamstown, Coburg and Northern (Preston) were all in the Division 1 at this stage so did not play Kilsyth and Berwick. Frankston and Werribee were also in Division 1 during this time, with these two teams admitted to the VFA after Brighton's departure in 1964.

Hawthorn has named the oldest and most experienced team in its VFL/AFL history (27.51, 150.0 games).

Previous highs: 27.38 (R5 1925) and 141.5 games (R15 2015).

Oldest AFL team since Geelong's losing 2010 PF side.

3300 games = 16th-highest combined games ever.

Have you got a list of those?

Most combined games?

Apologies, I must've had a filter applied when stating "6th-highest combined games". Have corrected to 16th-highest.

Zones are stupid. There's a correlation between interchanges, stoppages and scores. Trend line shows Scores heading down, Stoppages heading up.
Capping interchanges at 40 would increase scoring and accuracy, and decrease margins and stoppages.
