If Melbourne win, we will have had 8 different grand finalists in the past 4 years, in other words 4 years without a repeat grand finalist.

Hawks, Eagles, Dogs, Swans, Tigers, Crows, Pies and Demons.

When did we last have such a streak?

There has never been a streak of 8 different grand finalists over 4 years.

The longest streak is 6 different grand finalists over 3 years, which has now happened 8 times.

The first was:

1944 Fitzroy v Richmond, 1945 Carlton v South Melbourne, 1946 Essendon v Melbourne

This was followed by;

1960 Melbourne v Collingwood, 1961 Hawthorn v Footscray, 1962 Essendon v Carlton; which overlapped with

1962 Essendon v Carlton, 1963 Geelong v Hawthorn, 1964 Melbourne v Collingwood; and

1963 Geelong v Hawthorn, 1964 Melbourne v Collingwood, 1965 Essendon v St. Kilda

This was immediately followed by:

1966 St. Kilda v Collingwood, 1967 Richmond v Geelong. 1968 Carlton v Essendon

More recent instances are:

1995 Carlton v Geelong, 1996 North Melbourne v Sydney, 1997 Adelaide v St. Kilda

2015 Hawthorn v West Coast, 2016 Western Bulldogs v Sydney, 2017 Richmond v Adelaide

(and the current) 2016 Western Bulldogs v Sydney, 2017 Richmond v Adelaide, 2018 Collingwood v West Coast

Tim Kelly got 13 Brownlow votes as a first year player. Has any first year player ever done better than that?
The great Haydn Bunton got 26 votes in his debut year
https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/H/Haydn_Bunton.html

25 for Graham Moss

22 for Brad Hardie

Ron Alexander got 26 under the double vote system

Even Bucks got 14 in his debut year.

Henry Coles Melbourne 1980 Rd. 13 31/5 W
Peter Featherby Geelong 1982 Rd. 1 30/5 W
Michael Tuck Hawthorn 1983 Rd. 21 31/6 W

^ These players failed to receive a Brownlow vote in that season so were other examples of players getting 30+ disposals and kicking 5+ goals for 0 votes. There may have been other cases but impossible to know since votes weren't announced on a game-by-game basis prior to 1984.

By my count 207 players received votes in yesterday's Brownlow. How does this compare in terms of the highest number of players to receive votes in any year?

What's the longest consecutive games streak a player has had that has been broken by missing out on a grand final?

Has any team had two Brownlow medalists retire and made the GF the next year?

The only clubs to have two Brownlow winners retire in the same year are

Year|Club|Brownlow|Next Yr
\2017|West Coast|Mitchell, Priddis|
\2002|Sydney|Lockett, Kelly|11th
\1947|Collingwood|Fothergill, Whelan|3rd

Thanks Ron. Are you able to do a top 5 for pre-1987 (the old 12 team league)?

Plyrs|Year
\200|1976
\189|1977
\178|1984
\177|1985
\173|1983
\172|1979
\171|1986
Both umpires voted in 1976-77.

For the 52 counts 1931-1986, 24 of the top 26 occurred after 1962 (1934 and 1940 the exceptions). Perhaps television led to the umpires recognising more players.

Lewis Jetta has joined the list of players that Won Grand Finals For Multiple Teams, while Travis Varcoe has joined a rather unfortunate list.

Lost Grand Finals For Multiple Teams (Travis Varcoe - Geelong 2008, Collingwood 2018)
Played Grand Finals For Multiple Teams (did not win at both clubs or did not lose at both clubs)

Can anyone produce the list of Varcoe's mates? Or even suggest players that are on the list? Lance Franklin, ...
