I'm still confused as to how a mark can be recorded from something that wasn't technically a kick.

What's even more confusing is that Shannon Hurn can do a tiny kick to himself which isn't counted, but he could stand in the goalsquare and drill a 60m pass into the hands of Dean Cox, only for it also not to be counted as a kick.

Keeping in mind that the game has evolved a lot over the past 10 years. Midfielders or half backs are getting down to make sure the best available kicker is doing the kicking. Stats have obviously been around a lot longer, and if you think about stats purely from a statistical standpoint and not from a supercoach or dreamteam view, then you wouldn't want a full back's stats to be inflated by all the kickins he did. Whereas a ruckman taking a pack mark from a kickin, you would want that stat.

No one ever said stats had to add up, E.g. a teams only possession being a kickin and mark would yield 1 mark, 0 kicks. But this can happen in plenty of ways. A free kick where some other team member infringed for a reversal would result in original player getting 1 free for but 0 possessions.

there's not much stats on times of goal kicking, but do any of you guys have any records of three games in a row being won by a team who conceeded the first 3 goals of the game?

i'd say it's not happened to often.

still a way to go for the tigers, but it's a long way back for carlton.

Quick question guys. Anyone know when was the last time (before this year) we had last years premier taking on last years wooden spooner in Round 1?

I've only done a manual check but the most recent I could find was North Melbourne vs Carlton in 1971 (1970 last vs first). I'm not sure about any previous occurrences.

Sydney of course get to play 18th then 17th (from 2012) in the first 2 rounds of this year.

As a Bulldogs supporter, I have noticed that we broke our 11 game losing streak with a 68 point victory. Has any team broken a longer losing drought with a bigger win?

  • The average margin in Geelong's 10 game winning streak against Hawthorn is 2 goals lower than any other 10 game winning streak.

How does the rivalry rate in terms of closest series of games (regardless of winning streak)? Does it match the Swans v Eagles rivalry yet?

You could even extend it back to the last 13 games between the two.

The margins have been 4,11,26,8,1,9,2,19,5,31,2,2 and 7.

That's an average margin across 13 games of 9.7 points.

2 Questions that hopefully Ron The Bear can help me with...
1) How many father/son combinations have played for/against Dustin Fletcher? Names too, of course.
2) Extending from that... How many father/son combinations have played for/against other players (eg Tuck, Bartlett etc)?

Thinking og this as Jack Viney likely to play against Fletcher this weekend, joining his father Todd as a combatant.

I think you might need to create another X-million record database!

Let me know if its too much trouble!

Appreciate the help.

Sorry, I don't have that info in my db. The AFL Record Season Guide has all the player relations info...might have a go manually if I've got some spare time, but it won't be this weekend.

Thanks Ron... part 2 was a real tough ask. Even working on part 1 myself, I could generate this:

CURRENT LIST
Gary Ablett Snr /Jnr
Tony Liberatore / Tom
Michael Brennan / Jacob
Tim Watson / Jobe
Ross Smith / Jesse

TO BE COMPLETED COMBINATIONS
Todd Viney / Jack
Stephen Wallis / Mitch
Paul Couch / Tom
Brad Bootsma / Josh
Anthony Daniher / Joe
Barry Mitchell / Tom

There were 27 club debuts (where players who had previously played for another club debuted for a new club) in the first round of this season. That seems like an extremely high figure and I'm wondering how it compares with those from previous years.

There were also 17 AFL debuts and I would think it rather uncommon for the number of club debuts to outstrip the AFL debuts figure in the opening round.

The number of players debuting for new clubs has outstripped the number of VFL/AFL debutants 17 times, all since 1992. Expansion is keeping mediocre players in the system for longer.
