For the StKilda side of town there are steak nights galore!

Monday's: Elwood Lounge $13 Porterhouse is very good, there is a rotating $4 stubby special as well.

Tuesday: Clarendon Hotel in South Melbourne, $12 Porterhouse and $6.50 pints. Haven't been there for a little while but it was always packed when I have gone. Also the Prince Alfred has $15 Steak and Starch night which is good value.

Wednesday: This place will be chockablock tonight. The Balaclava on Carlisle St. $15 steak and you can have a eye filet, porterhouse or a huge (400gm?) rump. $6 pints of Mountain Goat is a big plus. There is always people waiting in the bars for a table so unless you're a table of 2-4 I'd book.

Thursday: La Roche on Acland. $15 Porterhouse and pot. Backpackers galore.

Friday: Elsternwick Hotel. 2 steaks for $30. No real drink specials in the in the bistro but it's an ALH pub so they'll have a monthly special, I think it's $5 crownies this month.

Saturday: On Top bar opposite Ormond station has a $12 steak night, never been but some mates who live near there rave about it. $6 pints as well.

Haven't seen anything on a Sunday that's more roast special day.

As far as quality with no price consideration.

Butchers Grill Bourke St: Might be called something else now, the Alexander room maybe? Russian influenced restaurant but has range of great aged meat, also has the best steak knives I've seen. They're like small swords!

La Luna in Carlton is Adrian Richardsons restaurant (curly red head tv chef) he wrote a book called "meat" so he knows what he's on about. If the service you go isn't too busy ask your waiter if you can go have a look in the kitchen. Adrian will show you around the meat aging rooms and you can see exactly why your steak tastes so damn good there.

The Railway Club in Port Melbourne does do a beautiful steak, they use a grass fed Tasmanian steak which might even be organic? Not overly expensive either. The 750gm rib eye is only $54 but you do have to pay for sauces and sides, chips are included.

I'd rate Meat and Wine co and Squires Loft above Rockpool these days, not just on the price, I think they both deliver a better dining experience.

Yeah I eat out too much...

Rare Steakhouse in Little Collins Street has fabulous steaks at a reasonable price. I also had dinner tonight at the newly opened Squires Loft Steakhouse in Essendon near the railway station.

I'm very impressed with the steaks at both of these restaurants.

What?!?!?! Squires loft Essendon has opened? I live around the corner and have been salivating every day I see the sign up!!

The station hotel in Napier street, Footscray has quality steaks.

It has a Rost Biff on the menu that is quite 'sweet' tasting.

I'd take these boys (who now also run the Wayside Inn in Sth Melb) over nearly all mentioned any day. Vlado still has Squires and Rare covered by a mile, but he is getting on. Although Rockpool rate their steaks both by quality and cooking method, I'd be telling them not to cut it for me and don't drown it in olive oil once you've plated up.

La Luna in Carlton is run by Adrian Richardson (red-head tubby bloke you've probably seen on tv), who ages his own beef in his coolroom. He treats meat seriously, knows how to cook it properly, and serves up a big size puppy. Not that there's anything to complain about what he has on offer, but if you want a certain cut and size aged for when you get there he's more than happy for you to request in advance.

As for cooking your own, old age got to my 2 old butchers (Yurens in Essendon and Excel in Carlton), but have had pretty good experiences with a few lately. Porterhaus in Moonee Ponds is a ripper butcher, and happy to age and size the cuts to what you want. There is also a bloke at the Vic Market that I've been heading to. He's the bloke in the corner on the right at the front of the Elizabeth St side. Not sure his name, but he has big slabs of his steak, quite a bit of wagyu, and happy to cut steaks any size you want. His presentation isn't amazing, but his steak is. Not a massive fan of wagyu myself, I'd prefer a bit of old-school grass fed porterhouse. Some of the best steak I've had has come from him and cooked on the barbie at home.

I have eaten steak at Rockpool Bar & Grill in Sydney and in Perth, and have never had it served cut, or in olive oil, so there is clearly this option?

Edit: Really need a poll on this thread as to who likes their steak done what... not really the theme, but could be interesting...

I agree with the Station hotel mentioned above. Best steak ive had and very resonably priced for what it is.

Vlados seemed to be abit overrated, unless i was just expecting to much. Rockpool was very very disapointing :thumbsd:

Another good option is Luke Mangans " the palace" on city rd i think. Very nice steak.

Rare to medium rare is my fav. that said I also like carpaccio ;)

Been to Meat & Wine Co, was great, expensive but.

Steakhouse at Pier 35 was also good.

My favourite steak is at a restaurant called 'Grill Steak Seafood' in Hardware Lane in the city. $42 for an aged eye fillet.

One of the best steaks I've had recently was at the North Sydney Hotel in Hobart.

Also, The Courthouse in North Melbourne does a good bar menu steaky steak.

You're right. I haven't eaten at the Perth one, but my steak come out "normal" at the Sydney Rockpool. I haven't been to RP melb in about 12 months, but the number of times I went there my steak come out cut in slices. Not only that, the knife they used must have been like a guillotine, as the cut was that clean that the drizzle of olive oil on the cut made the steak "slippery" to chew (the only way I could think to describe it). Flavour was great still, and the smell when you walk in was worth walking in alone.

Haven't been myself, but a bloke from work swears by Bekers in Northcote. Basically the same as Vlado's or the old Lazars in Collingwood, and they let you byo. May give it a try.

The hostesses are usually worthwhile as well

Do yourself a favour and head down there if you haven't done so yet. As I've already posted, the steaks are scrumptious and the salad I had the other night was just about perfect, too.

Had some absolutely killer steaks at Meat & Wine co. Was a regular until they changed their steak basting to a 'secret recipe' and refused to tell me what the allergens in it are. They'll still cook me a steak without the basting but what's the point, then it just tastes like something I could've made at home for $10, not $60.
