Hi, just wondering what people think of Geelong drafting Steve Owen with pick 35.
He comes from my part of the world and I remember playing against him a few times in junior (under 15s I think) footy. I remember him being good but not that good, so it was a big shock when I saw the Cats had picked him up.
He appears to be quick and is a decent build but I couldnt seriously see him being ready for AFL footy.

A lot can change in four years, especially in regards to a footballer’s physique and skills. Once you hit the development cycle of Under 16 (i.e. Geelong Falcons), you are endured through an arduous training regime.

Not only is that a factor, but consider the following: no slouch gets a game for any TAC Cup team these days – they are all quality footballers aspiring to great heights, and also; he may not have played to his best on the particular time you played against him.

Worth the query though.

Very true, I remember a thread listing the U16 All-Australian side from the appropriate year and there were maybe 4 four current AFL players (including Judd). Shows that outstanding juniors don't always make it and vice-versa.

He appears to be a late developer, with plenty of room for improvement, both physically and football-wise. He is probably going to be a long term project but one the club believe will pay off in the long run because there is an abundance of raw ability already there.

So true. Many of my mates played in the Falcons team with Bartel and Ablett Jnr. Jimmy was a star but Little Gaz really stuggled as a kid.
