When Johnson moved to the Giants much media speculation that it would be a playing role before moving onto the Giants' coaching staff (although never confirmed by GWS).
Now he is joining us because according to The Australian there was no "equivalent position available" at GWS.
GWS' current forward coach in Amon Buchanan retains his job.
However you would think that if, as The Telegraph article states, that Johnson possesses "an outstanding footy IQ" and was a mentor to young GWS players (particularly Greene and Patton) that they would be extremely keen to retain his expertise and perhaps even open up a specific position to enable that to occur.

Also wonder what process we used to identify Johnson as a suitable coach?
Sure Tom Harley played with Johnson, but Harley retired in 2009, so hardly a current reference.
Johnson's football ability not in doubt, but as a player his fitness, temperament, work ethic, selfishness were all considered issues at various times.

Certainly a talented, intuitive player, but not noted for his team first outlook.
Ranked 79th in 2017 in average goal assists across AFL players (in a GWS team that ranked 6th in scoring and equal 3rd in team goal assists).
2016 ranked 38th, 2015 73rd, 2014 68th, 2013 93rd.
By comparison guys like Eddie Betts, Robbie Gray and Toby Greene have all topped the goal assists table in those 5 years.

I'm sure that generally Swans supporters will welcome the appointment because as Carti2900 says "Hopefully he can provide some flair and originality for our forward line, which we all know has looked a bit one-dimensional at time", however I'm less convinced.

Great salesmen do not necessarily make great sales managers, because the skill set required is significantly different.
I've no doubt that a young player with Johnson's capabilities (but more discipline in all areas) would be a great asset, less sure about the present day Johnson in a coaching role.

Finally something interesting to talk about. By the sounds of it a really good acquisition. I get the feeling we are going into this off season with an aggressive mindset to go out there and get the guys we want both on and off the feild. Something we haven't done the last few years which obviously the trade ban didn't help. We have more list spaces available than just the 3 required changes and I can see another spot or two opening up over the trade period. No wholesale changes but just enough to shake it up a little. Welcome Steve

If all he brings is an answer as to how to beat the short kicking game, he will be very successful!!

Maybe he wants a change of scenery and wants to add an extra club to his CV? Maybe he has heard from others how well we are run as club etc. and wants to be part of it?

So Kennelly and Laidler are development coaches, Davis transitions from development to an Academy role, Johnson will be our forward line coach, which means Kirk will be moving as well. Playfair was our backline guy so either Kirk moves there or there will be further shuffling.

Johnson getting to teach Hayward, Papley and Heeney excites me.
