Hmm, if he's been battling issues for some time, and it was in some sense elective, I don't really get why he wasn't put under the knife 3 weeks ago. Better to miss the NAB, than to miss the first 6 weeks of the year, in which we have an extremely tough draw which will shape our season.

I suppose the silver lining is it creates opportunities for younger players to step up, but it's still pretty bad news.

Over the last week.
Apparently.

SJ has tweeted that the knee finally caught up with him and he is pretty happy with the post-surgery feedback.

I see the silver lining here, the Cats are pre-empting possible issues with niggling injuries now rather than later in the year.
Take a month off now and miss a few early rounds instead of doing possibly a worse injury and being out for 2 months from round 15.
I'd rather SJ be off now than do a knee on the eve of the finals.
I'd rather have no ruck now than none in the finals.
I'd rather have Vardy and Menzel finding fitness now than come in and injure themselves later in the year.
I'd rather the Cats take the best chance of fixing guys now while they can do it easier/better than risk them for a longer term injury.
I'd also rather have my fellow Cat supporters to be optimistic and see the positive instead of the reverse.

To this... we all owe his knee a mulligan after getting up in 2011 in 6 days.....

I'll give his knee ( even if it is the other one - free pass by association - ) the pass this time...

Better now than he play like Jimmy last year all hurt and broken and at 60%.....

Yep exactly my point.
I think we should give his knee a medal personally. I love "the knee".

"The people's knee"

If it is good enough for Hudson (and the Rock for that matter) it is good enough for Steve Johnson.

Have heard he'll be back by Round 4. Personally think his return will be later than that, would be nice to get him back ASAP but I'm just not sure the club will risk putting him out on the park for a tough away match against the Swans. Suspect he might come back somewhere between Rounds 6-8.

Big short-term loss for us, but far better for SJ in terms of his fitness and his season as a whole to get this surgery over and done with now than to ignore it and aggravate the problem.

It also gives some of the kids a big opportunity to fill his shoes. Murdoch, Smedts, Caddy, possibly Menzel if he is right to go, plus anyone else I've missed need experience and game time. The absence of Johnson gives us a perfect opportunity to provide them with it. :thumbsu:

I'll be surprised if he misses more than 3.
