I'd have another look at McDonald as well - we are really lacking someone who can tie the batsmen up and build pressure from one end.

Smith has looked great this innings give him a longer run in my 11

Cosgrove
Watson

Lynn
White (C)
Smith

Boyce or Okeefe
Johnson
Siddle
Copeland/Mckay

around the fringes

Fergusson
Finch
Paine

I'm not going to say Smith is the answer just yet, but you can already see an improvement in his batting. I just don't know what it means if he ends up being the bowler/batter we are wishing for?

Do we play him and Paine/Wade and 7/8 and pick another batter or play them at 6/7 and play another bowler?

As much as I like seeing the young blokes get a game, I don't believe Smith is up to it just yet. Anyway we have the perfect #6 waiting in the wings when his little finger is better.

I'm inclined to agree, although personally I reckon our best number 6 is currently opening the batting.....

I'm a big Smith fan, but I think he probably needs a couple of years of strong performances at Shield level to get his technique in order and his bowling more consistent.

I really don't get the love for White either. He had his chance batting at 8 and barely scored a run.

And as for this NSW bias thing, remind me how many selectors they've had on the panel over the last 15 years?

Even Duminy was a year or so older when he took us to pieces.

Duminy is on the sidelines now after 12 tests. although that is to be expected when your last 12 innings only produce 2 scores above 20.

i wouldn't have picked smith for this series but now that he is in the time i wouldn't drop him. i think he needed another couple of seasons in shield cricket at which stage he would've been 23 and we would have had a fairer indication of where he is at as a player.

i reckon he'll turn out allright. not a great technique, but it's one that is more workable than hughes'.... and batting at number six you can get away with a looser technique.

i would've preffered marsh or ferguson come in at six for the perth test, but anyway.

Barely scored a run at no8, how terrible of him! Yet still averaged about 10 more than Smith...

LOL aye, averaged 30 and with better bowling figures than smith...whats he on now? 3 wickets at 80?

still we can't persist with white, a proven captain with a century against bresnan and tremlet, but persist with smith because he has potential...

hughes and smith have had longer chances than most already.

Agree. Ponting 5, Watson 6 would be perfect.

I look forward to seeing him in a couple of years, and get rid of the pull shot.

That's what I don't get either. It really is a Victorian thing and has been like that for more than this generation.

nsw cricket boss gilbert declared smith could be the captain of the test team (reminds him of steve waugh).

ffs just let the boy play and try to cement his spot in the team before annointing him!
Wow, never thought I would hear the boss of NSW say such a bad thing about one of the legends of NSW

Comes across as a smart alec. When the poor bloke copped a Tait full toss in the most tender of spots (commentry was priceless) he was surrounded by trainers & recieving treatment. Smith decided to pick up his opponents bat & practice his forward defence at the batting crease. It was something you see at u14s level, not at a World Cup & seemed very patronising to me. Who does he think he is? He's another golden child from NSW & god help us if he ever becomes a regular Test player, let alone captain. Very ordinary cricketer who just keeps getting picked. Great fieldsman though can't deny that.

Ha. That is ordinary, plenty of players pick up and swing the opposition player's bat, if you think there is something wrong with that, I don't really know what to say.

that is ****en village, i hate when that kind of shit happens in cricket. it is one of the last bastions of ettiquette in sport along with union and golf.

i wonder if his forward defence practise shots ended up finding the outside edge

So he picks it up, has a swing with it and then gives it back to the batsman once he has recovered. Get a grip.
