Pre-WWI was undoubtedly a good time to be a bowler. Some very low averages amongst this lot.

Yeah - definitely. I guess there must have been some advances in pitch development because I don't think covers where a thing until after WWII.

Perhaps also improvement in batting coaching and techniques.

It's a shame there is so little vision of pre-WWI cricket. There's not a whole lot from between WWI and WWII either.
