Thank god for that because Casey still has 4 or 5 seasons left in him.
 
I've been thinking about this. It's not a big deal if he does "retire". I mean, he could take a few years off at the end of this year, not sit on a bike and get a contract whenever he wants, there would not be a team who wouldn't take him. He could still race for 10 years after that.

He's been racing for a long time, he's in his mid-20's, but in racing terms, he's in his late 30's! His parents took him out of school before you are legally allowed to, to go racing in Europe. Fulfilling a fantasy for his parents similar Lewis Hamilton has with his Dad. You know what I'm saying?

Appears slightly more to it than just having had enough of the travelling and being away from family. He obviously thinks that MotoGP is no longer relevant and he isn't the first to say that, Rossi has also gone on record as saying he isn't happy with the current format - although many wrote that off as him just being uncompetitive at Ducatti.

"This sport has changed a lot and it has changed to the point where I am not enjoying it," he said.

"I don't have the passion for it and so at this time it's better if I retire."

He added: "There are a lot of things that have disappointed me, and also a lot of things I have loved about this sport, but unfortunately the balance has gone in the wrong direction.

He has pretty close links to the Triple 8 Holden team, so if he races V8s then you'd have to think they will be in the front-running.

Certainly his interviews make it clear that it's likely he'll go to four-wheeled motorsport at some stage. Hopefully he does better than Wayne Gardner.
 
Amazing and sad, what a rider, what a champion, what a loss to the sport and what a loss for Australians to lose one of the greatest world champions of world sport. I feel robbed. I reckon the arm pump has a lot to do with it. Perhaps it has taken the joy out of it? I mean pushing yourself to go flat out and cope with the G forces that goes with going flat out around corners and braking late is one thing, but to constantly put up with pain and discomfort is another.

I am not sure what exactly arm pump is but if it means you are having trouble pulling in the brake handle then i imagine there is some sort of pain or sensation associated with it. Not to mention how dangerous it can be if you are having trouble braking at 250 - 300km and hour? Can anyone give an analogy as to what arm pump feels like? I imagine a bit like using a hammer drill above your head?

I wonder if the timing of his announcement is strategic? It is still early in the season and maybe he is hoping it might jolt the governing body into making some of the changes he would like to see? Perhaps not for this season but if they make some changes for next season i reckon he might have a rethink. He's a smart young man, it wouldn't surprise me.

To lose Simoncelli in tragic circumstances and now Stoner at the end of the season will rock the sport.

"They call it arm pump because your arms pump up full of blood. The muscles all inflame and swell and that starts blocking the nerves," Magee said.

"So the messages going from your brain down your arm to tell you how hard to twist the throttle, how hard to pull the brake and all that become vague. The harder you try the worse it gets but if you try to relax for a few laps that doesn’t work either. So you’re just stuck with it.

"Your forearms become disconnected from your brain and you lose both power and control. So not only are you weak but you can’t get your arm and your hand to do what you want it to do.

"It’s carpal tunnel syndrome."

Huge respect for stoner and his reasons....he has nothing to prove. Good for him. Sad for us supporters and viewers. What a way to go out if he wins this years championship. :thumbsu:

Are there any potential aussies to have a competitive seat in MotoGp in the near future?

You wonder if what happened to Marco Simoncelli played a factor in his retirement.
Still he could retire a 3 time champ at 26.Not a bad effort.
 
No surprise to hear him retire really, with everything that's going on (Young family, deaths in the sport, his health problems).

I wish him the best, but would love to see him go out on top with one more title.:thumbsu:

Can't blame him there. If he wasn't a Moto GP champ he'd be punching well above his weight.

Would love to see him in F1, i reckon he would rip it up there but i guess that means a lot of travel if that's one of the reasons for his decision to retire. I wonder if Christian Horner might might be interested in having a coffee with Stoner? That might get the juices flowing. At 26 i wouldn't say it's too late, he knows all about speed, G forces, grip and managing tyres.

Imagine if he became a F1 champion and Moto GP champion. Has that ever been done before (equivalent category of course)?

Willing to bet that it did play some part, but also feel the move to 1000cc bikes and the fact that it seems the catergory is going to have only 2 manufacturers inside the next few years. I can't see Ducati remaining. They are uncompetitive and not willing to put the sort of money into it that Honda and Yahama are. I sense Stoner knows this to be true and can't see the point in remaing in what will become an irrelevant competition.

Im thinking Nissan... He has Red Bull sponsorship and so does Rick Kelly. Maybe Red bull might increase it to field a car for Stoner?

But to be honest, i think his talent would be sort of wasted in V8's. I'd love to see him get a drive in F1 but that's highly unlikley, unless STR try?

MotoGP is pretty boring now so you can't blame him. To have only 3 riders able to win (Stoner, Dani and Jorge) isn't that exciting. Can see Duacti calling it quits soon.

He's already said a few times that he doesn't like the CRT rules... seeing as MotoGP bosses have said its the way its going i guess they made the decision easier for him?

Ahh well, amazing fete. I just can't imagine Stoner finding the motivation to drive Supercars if he has lost the motivation to ride Moto GP bikes. I could see the logic in making the jump across to F1 but i can't see how he would get a thrill out of racing Supercars instead of laying a bike sideways at 200km plus an hour and swaping elbows and fairings is much more daring than swapping door handle paint.

Could of been known as an absolute legend of the sport, i rate his talent to be on par, possibly higher than Rossi.
His head hasnt been in it for about 2-3 years now.
If he could get that sorted he could dominate for another 5+ years.

Will never get the recognition he deserves due to being so serious and boring.
If he showed more flair and celebrated the victories better he would get more attention from media and casual viewers around the world.

Really wish he could get his head back in the game, massive talent going to waste.
Will also probably regret it later in life.
