Let's see.

He was sacked from Coventry after they were relegated from the premiership.

He had very few clubs show an interest until Southampton offered him the manager position in a move that was roundly criticised.

He completely turns the club around, taking us to our highest ever position in the premiership.

Finally, he decides to leave to the club to spend more time with his family.

As far as I'm concerned he's going to walk away from Southampton a man much in demand, a far cry from when he was appointed by the club.

And where does that leave us?

Just biding our time until we appoint another next manager who will walk out on us when he gets a better offer

Bye Gordo

Chairman's statement

Following the recent disclosure in January that Gordon Strachan will not be renewing his contract beyond the end of this season for personal reasons, the Club has become the focus of a great deal of press speculation about his likely successor. Gordon and I met yesterday and have both concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for him to step down as Manager with effect from today.
Gordon has done a great job for us during his two and a half years tenure and, unusually in football, leaves us on the very best of terms. He and his family will always be welcome at our Club while I remain Chairman.

I have spoken to Steve Wigley and he has agreed to take charge of the first team until the end of the season. Steve is an excellent coach, is well respected by all our players and staff, and understands the importance of the next thirteen Premier League games.

That we are the daily subject of national news at present shows how far our Club has come since moving to St Mary’s. The media of all kinds are using us to provide their copy and prey upon our past insecurities in order to peddle their wares. We must all overcome these impediments to success on the football pitch and close ranks to ensure a successful conclusion to this season.

I can assure all our supporters that we are taking the appointment of Gordon’s successor very seriously and will take the necessary time to explore our numerous options. An appointment will be made when we are ready, but in the meantime, it is the football which must come first.

Gordon Strachan said: “This is a truly great club with a truly great squad of professionals and it is with regret that I am leaving for my own reasons. Steve Wigley will do a first class job between now and the end of the season and I fully support his interim appointment. The Chairman and I feel this to be the best course of action. I hope the media will now allow the Club to fully concentrate on the remaining fixtures of this season while the Chairman works to appoint my successor.”

Popular version of events appears to be that Hoddle was the choice. Lowe told Strachan, but then had to back-flip when the fans kicked up a stink. Lowe asked Strachan to finish the season but Strachan gave the two fingered salute. Probably all BS.

I guess having Wigley as caretaker for the last 13 games will let us look at the likes of Adams and Sturrock at the end of the year. Also could well see Ged Houllier looking for a job and he'd be half-decent (just half mind).

Wigley has a pretty good record. Manager at non-league Aldershot, assitant Youth Academy director at Forest PROMOTED to reserve team manager PROMOTED to first-team coach. Coach of the England Under-21s under Platt. Appointed reserve coach at Saints PROMOTED to reserve coach / youth director and now PROMOTED to caretaker.

The Saints reserves, under-19s and under-17s are all top of their leagues so he is doing something right. Who knows, he may even keep the job.
