Best practice of promoting from within is doing well. Been shite for a decade.
If you are promoting from internally, you are carrying over known standards and performance indicators. If you are an elite organisation by practice, not just name, it works. If you are in the best 10-15% of the field, internal is FINE. When you haven’t won Jack shit for 20 years, you’re not a leader in the industry anymore, the stability model doesn’t create growth, there is no cross pollination and zero IP shared.

Get Josh in and get a heap of new assistants, even if they have zero coaching experience, get them from recent players from Sydney, Hawthorn, Collingwood, Geelong and Richmond. Likes of Travis Varcoe, Dylan Grimes, Alex Keath, Sam Reid, Sam Managola, Rhys Matthieson, Jason Castanga… not the absolute elite, but the blokes who worked their arse off!

We probably were top 10/15% from a fitness perspective about 10 years ago. But we've fallen away over time and continue with the internal promotions.

I, for one, am shocked that our rigorous process of internally promoting a guy to replace the guy we internally promoted to replace a guy has not paid dividends.

And yes, I’m aware this post could confuse people due to the fact it would be equally fitting in our reserves coach thread, assistant coaches thread, and CEO thread.

Do what Choco did when he became coach, tap up the 2IC at a club with an impressive fitness program (think Geelong or Brisbane) and get them over here. Choco made Andrew Russell a star and he was 2IC to John Quinn at Essendon when they were top flight.
