Im scared now because Nick Poulos just left GWS

He was non-commital about his post-GWS future, said he is getting into a consultancy role.

Maybe Josh will get him in to build an AFL weights program in that capacity.

Ok we need a new fitness guy now, but we also need a strategy for the one we need to employ in 6 or 7 years time.

In the lead up to the Brisbane Olympics, just like in the lead up to the Sydney Olympics, a shit load of money will be thrown into the the sport science area at the AIS and the state institutes, especially in Qld but also in NSW and Vic as these 3 states will be helping develop the majority of Olympians, to try and win a huge haul of Olympic medals. Those sports institutes will be at the world cutting edge of sport science technology and methodologies by then.

We got Andrew Russell via Essendon from the VIS. The VIS had a lot of 1996 and then 2000 Olympians in their programs and Russell got to work with them for 3 or 4 years before he moved on to Essendon and Port.

Then John Quinn at Essendon pinched Russell to be his assistant for their 2000 premiership campaign. Quinn had worked at the AIS for a decade or so, involved in athletics and other Olympic sports and Essendon pinched him for the 1998 season. Quinn after helping Essendon win the flag then worked with the Oz sprinters and relay team at the Sydney Olympics. Quinn is still involved in sports science and working with elite programs but an autoimmune disease about a dozen years ago, when he was GWS' high performance boss, sees him doing more consulting role than the full time high performance jobs. Has worked with Penrith during their 4 flags run, the Oz Olympic athletics team, the IOC asked him to work with the refugee athletes who competed at the last 2 Olympics and he works in GWS' academy program, think he still is the academy director.

We pinched Russell from Essendon straight after they won the flag, and gave a young 25 year old Russell his head and said you can be head of our high performance. Burgo IIRC was only about 27 when we gave him the job after Russell left.

25 years later, things have moved on, and someone so young wont get the highest job at an AFL club. They will need at least a decades experience in the elite sports environment.

We need a plan to find a 35 year old Andrew Russell type who has worked with many Olympians building up for a 2032 home Olympics who will be working at the AIS or 3 of the big state institutes. VIS probably is better as that person would have had some involvement with footy.

We should probably be trying to find someone like that now, but in 6 or 7 years time we should be for sure.

Worked for Grenville Dietrich back in the day
The story of him ordering pizza to be delivered to then arrive at the pizza shop to be delivered home with the pizza is genius.
