Unfortunately the Melbourne Football Club has released a statement on their website.

MELBOURNE is saddened by the passing of Stuart Spencer - a dual Melbourne premiership player and one of the game's legendary characters.

Spencer passed away on Tuesday. He was aged 79.

He wore No. 12 in 122 games for Melbourne and played in the 1955 and 1956 premierships. Spencer was was also a dual Best and Fairest winner in those premiership years.

Champion player who was a premiership hero for us. RIP. :(

This is a great pity. He was a true Melbourne guy - and Establishment too, which always riles up the opposition mugs. It is a pity that he did not stay longer at the club as a player.

After the '87 Preliminary FInal, he barged into the umpires' rooms and gave them the double barrell job.

And now there is one less Melbourne premiership player in the world. When will the number be replenished?
