He has the ability to be a good 2nd tier player for us. His game against Melbourne at the MCG was pretty good. I'm happy he's staying, his comeback season after 2 knee recons was as good as could be expected.

I wouldnt say we're stuck with him, I'm glad we've still got him.
Hopefully next season we'll see some more improvement, our team can't be all superstars.

I agree with D4E.
If there's a general rule in football, its that players who have double recos have ****ty comeback years. Thats just the way it is- a 2 year hole in your career leaves you thoroughly out of the loop, and missing a couple of preseasons blows a gigantic chunk out of your fitness that is especially a worry if you're a midfielder.
Some players get their careers back on track in the following season, some never recover, and fall away.
Read had 1 or 2 decent games this year, and not much else. but with him and also Morrison, season 2004 will tell whether they still have an AFL career. Read does have some things in his favour- he's young, a hard worker, and his most significant trait as a footballer, the 'angry gene', is not at all harmed by the recos. His position in the side- (close checking small defender/tagger) is still open if he can find the form to make it his own again.
Really, though, it all comes down to his preseason. If he has a good preseason, gets his fitness and confidence levels up, and pushes his way into the side in round one, he might never look back. By the same token, though, he should be spending up on lucky charms, and sacrificing virgins to whichever deity he favours, because any injury which limits his preseason next year will very likely finish his career.

I respectfully differ in my view of Read.
I didn't rate him highly before the knee injuries and can't say I'm a big fan of his now. Morrison, on the other hand is an altogether different player and one I think we desperately need to be fit and firing.
And if I hear of the whereabouts of any virgins, I'll be sure to let you know.

The thing with Read is he gives us a different look.
He's nuggety, he's a close checker, he's a niggler, he's not afraid to throw it around. Compared to the rest of the midfield (prob. Kerr excepted) he likes the physical stuff and that is something we lack. If Read could be a bit more Josh Carr and bit less crap in 2004 then we'd all be happy.
Having said that, I have to admit to getting a feeling of excitement upon hearing the supposed offer on Read plus first rounder for Richo. I don't know if it was because I think it'd be a good thing for us or because I was so sick of not seeing any trade action. I'm thinking in the long run we won't regret that no going through.

Worsfold, Jakovich and Mainwaring all had horrible seasons after their knee reconstructions. Phil Read needs to have a big pre-season and build up his confidence. He was in the top 3 for East Fremantle for the first 6 weeks of this season, so he can still play good football - he just has to find out how to translate that onto AFL level again.

I doubt it would be TPP pressure. West Coast just aren't willing to pay his contractual demands... concidering he's done nothing for 3 years and at the same time being payed quite well for it.

There was a big post on the Draft Board around 11 today that contradicts your version... Which is where my question stemms from...
At the end of the day neither you, I or the person who posted that rumour will really know the truth...but neither you nor I can be absolute about what we were or not doing.

Surely you would delist others before Read. His form in the WAFL at the beginning of the year was streets ahead of others and it was a shame he couldn't sustain this form into his AFL games, but we have to remember he is coming back from 2 knee reconstructions. If he can recapture his 1999 2000 form then we are looking at someone who had the same amount of possesions as Braun did this year.

couldn't have said it any better.
Just go to the second Port game this year, as much as footy has become a skills game throughout the 90's, and less emphasis on physical/thuggish type game, we seriously lack a little pr!ck to p1ss off the opposition. Chick and Kerr are wasted in that role, but Phil fits it like a glove, even the best teams have one defensive midfielder, and I'm quite happy for Phil to fill that role, that's why he makes my 22.

Renegotiating the contracts of Embley, Hunter and Fletcher this week wouldn't have helped either. If Read is prepared to negotiate a performance based contract, I could see him doing well for himself. A good pre season and retaining the form he had at the start of last season would see him head towards a good pay packet.

Im glad we didnt trade him, Read and Morrison deserve at least one more year to prove their worth, I think they will both come through.

I, like most others, are glad we are "Stuck" with Phil Read. Exeter obviously doesn't watch much footy (or know anything about the game !) to make such a stupid comment.
Phil is a player that gives his all every time he goes onto the field. People go around waving stats as the answer to everything but they aren't. It's the little things like the shepherding, tackling, 2nd & 3rd efforts, Chasing etc, etc that players like Phil do that has a major impact on the games and makes other players look like stars because it helps them end up with the "BIG STATS".
Several people say they prefer Chad Morrison to Phil Read but Morrison seems scared of packs and will not go in hard. He stands around watching while others (like Ready) go in and do the hard work. Morrison also appears to have a problem with chasing a player who has beaten him.
If the club is silly enough to let him go then it's a decision that will come back to haunt them next season.

I agree...I too must say prefer Read to Morrison for the very same reasons you mention. Additionally though what I really like about Read is his ability to get inside opponents head, a bit like Woosha and Tony Shaw used to. Infact I remember reading a poll few years ago when Read was in his second year he was at that stage one of most disliked players in the AFL just like Woosha. We should have more players like that.
I have also met Read a few times, even given his a life to a few functions when he was in Melbourne and he is genuinely a great guy. Really down to earth and focused on being the best he can be.
