All this talk of Graham being our backup ruckman to Troy is laughable in a year which is supposedly our's to make the 8.

I mean where has he been these past 2 years? Has he really been that injury riddled and not ready for AFL that Patto has had to play by default.

OK so he's 21, thats a plus, and we probably can wait and till he plays a few more games before we really judge. But he better be our next star ruck, caus I just wonder where Vickery stands.

I say throw Tyrone straight in a la Kruezer!!! :thumbsu:

Thoughts?

Vickery isn't ready IMO, needs to bulk up & get stronger hands in marking contests (from what I saw in the Collingwood game).

The reason Graham hasn't been playing No. 2 ruckman is because Patto was it & he is now injured. So it seems logical to me.

Kreuzer didn't play until Round 4 last year so technically he wasn't thrown straight in, he also had a heavier frame than Vickery too.

Not by default but for the whole of last year he had ankle problems recurring from the ankle he broke late in the previous season and wasn't able to get it right. That stopped any real chance he had to challenge Patto.

I'm not saying he will be a ruckman but there's no harm giving a him a shot since he's the best man for the job at this stage.

Graham is fit, strong and ready to have a crack now so deserves to be tested as our 2nd ruckman in the first few weeks.
This will also give Vickery a few games (and game time) against men in the VFL to get used to the rigors and speed of the game at the highest level... and therefore will give him the chance to push for selection.

If Gus does not do well enough in the first month or so I expect Vickery (or Patto) to get the call-up.

Then of-course I also hear "The Hum V" Brown had a good game last Friday...

You contradict yourself.
You're unhappy with Graham cause you feel the urgency for the club to be professional and make the 8, yet you want a kid fresh off the boat to replace him.

Simple test.
Put Graham up against Vickery over and over again in a real match situation.
Graham would smash him. Therefore...

Vickery's not ready.
Graham is. Body wise and mentally.

As a ruckman, I haven't seen anything yet that suggests Vickery is anywhere near ready. I seriously doubt we will see him play this year at all. He just doesn't seem to be one of those players who is ready to go right out of U18s like some are - in particular physically.

Hopefully Andrew Browne will get another chance this weekend on the GC to show something, as he looks alot closer to the mark physically, at least.

But in the mean time, I assume Graham will get his chance to make an impression, due to a lack of other options. Carlton is probably a good first up test for him, as their ruck stocks are not so strong.

I think if I was an opposition ruckman I would much rather play against a kid in Vickery than an older guy.

I'd smash him into little pieces at the first ruck contest.

Those are my thoughts.

It has been mentioned in a couple of articles the club was very pleased with Browne in his first proper match for us. He should be named in the Brisbane match and hopefully he does well again. If Graham isn't doing the job we have other prospects we can bring in to try out. Don't forget Putt too. Moral of this little post .. Don't worry, be happy in the words of Bob Marley.

Graham has been a rookie listed player, so couldn't play.

You've just proven how little you know about Football and thats even if you know anything. Graham is finally ready to play AFL with his body big enough and Vickery is in his first year and skinny as yet you want Vickery to be #2 Ruckman?

Your main argument for not using Graham is because we want to play finals in 2009 yet you want to play an 18 year old as our 2nd Ruckman? :o

i think if Vickery were to play at all it would be in the forward line with the very occasional few minutes in the ruck.

Probably not worth it yet, he's not in our best 22 and we don't really need to rush games into him.
I think he might impress at Coburg and push for selection but realisticly might not debut until late or next year.

You're wrong to think Vickery would be better at this stage, but right in implying that Graham is a dud.

Maybe what he was trying to imply was that we should Vickery instead because he would be better around the ground, which is true.. much quicker and more agile. For ruck contests, probably not as good as Gus just yet but in football these days you don't need to dominate the ruck to have a dominant team.

What you aren't considering is the impact of playing 2nd ruck has on an undeveloped body. Only reason why I'd prefer Graham, not because I think he is a better player.

The only issue I have is still the fact we'll play Graham in a do or die year for Wallace. Sure he is not the be all and end all, don't get me wrong, I'm just concerned how this will affect our midfield when Troy is resting.

It'll be interesting...I'm happy to let him have a chance and prove me wrong...but I think someone like Vickery has more versatility, even if he is undersized.

People here bagging Graham have got no clue the guy has finally got his body right and deserves his chance now what do you expect a Dean Cox overnight??,Everyone knows Ruckman take a while to develop and it's going to take a good 2 to 3 seasons for him to fully mature just have look around the other clubs at there ruckman.Throwing Vickery is not the answer that would be the same story as like the magpies did to Fraser when they drafted him and now his body is wornout and weake.I remember watching Browne's highlights for Vic country last year before preseason draft and liked this kid and wished we picked him up. I think we could have a real good player.

I agree with what your saying, although it took me a while to get there.

It will be interesting to see who we promote out of our rookies.

How tall / heavy is Browne?

He is listed at 104kg & 204cm, but I'm not sure how accurate/uptodate that is. Has a very good leap for his size, which really showed when he was jumping over King and Gardiner last Friday night.

Not sure how much of the pre-season he participated in, but I suspect he would still need some amount of work on his base fitness.
