Makes it a bit annoying because you can't quote posts in locked threads.
Something to do with the limitations of threads over a certain size.

Hm yeah that's lame. I remember the GD thread on the Swans board used to get closed when it hit a certain number of pages, guess it's the same line of thinking.

Yeah they used to get shut at 1,000 pages. Now it's 10k posts.

Tis correct, I was hoping it didn't need it, but yeah, it needs all that.

The only way to get that number is to 'tweet' the number (not actually tweet it, but press the tweet button to get the number) and then simply replace the quote with the details and number (ideally, you would already quote the member you want to talk to).
