The time has come here in hell to restart a tradition that has been culturally significant to generations of Australia's who had nothing but free to air television, Sunday night at the movies.

The premise: Each Sunday a poster who wants to be part of this will be selected on a rotational basis to select a movie for us to watch. We have a week to watch the movie if and when we can and discuss it in this thread. Preferably we would select a movie that is available on the free to air streaming services such as SBS on Demand, 7 Plus and so on. As most have Netflix or Prime so this is also an option.

There is no obligation, just an opportunity to perhaps have movies suggested to you you might never watch otherwise and do likewise for others. Also the opportunity to discuss the movie and you opinions on it. Anyone welcome to jump in at any time.

to find out what movie is on what streaming service check out: https://www.justwatch.com/

I mean a lot of them are on Netflix
Yeah I recogbize Companion. I guess in the time I hace for tv my priorities lately have been classics. Some good films on offer

Im half way through Awakenings
Interesting film. Book is very interesting too.

Okay so obviously the movie makes a sentimental narrative - nothing wrong with that. But it’s mind blowing that what happened more broadly actually happened. It’s a sci-fi concept only it actually occurred

Haven't seen Awakenings for years

I like Oliver Sacks, though any number of scientists quibble with his finding, because his interests seem to lie in not only looking at the neuroscience of born illness, acquired illness, brain injury etc and how it manifests, but trying to look at the person and the humanity of a person rather than their being of research interest.

Stop saying a movie with Jared Leto in it is good
I don't want to have to watch a movie with Jared Leto in it
You clealry haven’t seen Suicide Squad
Gra Gra.

Fabulous soundtrack too. Probably first and last time you’re ever going to hear a few bars of Britten’s Suite for Solo Cello No. 1 in a movie. I’m also patting myself on the back for correctly calling Cecelia Bartoli singing the Bellini.

But a brilliant movie.
Think I just heard a piece of the music you mentioned. Well placed and unique.

Mrs Crim’s selection and the final movie for 2025 is the 1996 Christmas movie: The Long Kiss Goodnight

Left field Christmas movie! Also, one I’ve seen, albeit a very long time ago.
Me too - long enough that I have forgotten enough for a rewatch but I’m pretty sure I liked it. Good stuff. Die Hard tonight and Long Kiss tomorrow afternoon once I get sick of partner PGs family

Yeah, I might give it a go tonight. I remember watching it and liking it too.

Harry Potter will be our Christmas movie. We have a tradition in my house where every Christmas we watch an episode of Harry Potter on Christmas night as I have three youngish kids. It has been going for 4 years. it might starting to get e a touch too dark for my youngest daughter who is 9 but it adds more excitement to Christmas for them. I got the idea form someone on here, possibly Lore .

Oh yeah - movie 4 is where that kid dies at the end and the slit-eyes guy comes back to rule the world in darkness or something?

Yeah 9 is pretty young but I reckon I saw some confrontational stuff pretty young and I’m a perfectly sane and balanced person as you know so…
