He actually took the initiative to stay up here when all the other first-year guys went home,” co-captain David Swallow told SUNS Media.

“That was pretty impressive for him to make that choice to stay up here and take the opportunity to focus and train and get better.”

High Performance Manager Alex Rigby echoed Swallow’s comments after working closely with Flanders on his personal training program.

“He’s one that’s just flourishing from learning how to be an athlete,” Rigby told SUNS Media.

“He’s training the house down, he’s super engaging and he’s interested in developing.

“We chat a couple of times a week and talk about different aspects of his program.

“He’s willing to learn and he’s been one for me that’s really stood out through this period

Yeah Dew gave Flanders a huge rap on Tuesdays edition of Fox footy live.
Said he’s been training his A** off with Ben Ainsworth.
Dew said he was a long way of getting a game in round 1 just fitness wise but said with all the hard work he’s been doing in this little break he’s bridged the gap big time and is a huge change for a round 2 debut

That must be why he wasn't considered for either Neafl or AFL at the time. His fitness.

Gotta debut Flanders and Rankine. Gonna make us a young team with Matt and Noah but need games in these guys.

Forward line with King, Rankine, Flanders and Sexton. Very very young but talent is all there.
Yeah that’s the trouble- youth. We need to have the balance of experience, talent and age

More thrashings then they will get sick of losing and ask to trade to Victoria or SA.. at some stage the cycle has to change 10 years of the same thing hasn’t worked

Play your best team, regardless of age or experience.

Will an experienced, but less talented player help you win, where a more talented kid won’t?

There will likely be plenty of chances to rotate players in and out of the team this year. Especially the younger kids who might tire after 8 or 10 games on the trot.

Love these kinds of stories.

Reward for effort. Working your ass off and getting results, Warms my cold dead heart.

Flanders was probably one of those guys who excelled purely on natural athletic capacity and talent.
Good to see that he has been made aware and realised that hard work is absolutely required to make it in the AFL.

Can't wait to see him rewarded with an AFL debut. Think he'll one of our favourite players in the years to come.

I think our best 18 is a good mix of youth and experience when you really look at it.

Backline
B: Harbrow (31yo, 245 games), Collins (26yo, 24 games), Lukosius (19yo, 22 games)
HB: Hanley (31yo, 161 games), Thompson (29yo, 103 games), Bowes (22yo, 43 games)
Average age: 26.3yo
Average games: 99.6 games

Midfield
C: Ellis (26yo, 177 games), Swallow (27yo, 140 games), Weller (24yo, 87 games)
Fol: Witts (27yo, 103 games), Greenwood (28yo, 58 games), Rowell (18yo, 1 game)
Average age: 25yo
Average games: 94.3 games

Forward line
HF: MacPherson (22yo, 40 games), Day (27yo, 121 games), Ainsworth (22yo, 42 games)
F: Rankine (20yo, 0 games), King (19yo, 15 games), Sexton (26yo, 119 games)
Average age: 22.6yo
Average games: 56.1 games

Obviously our forward line is the youngest and most inexperienced area but it's also full of high end talent which may make up for the lack of experience (four top 6 picks). I don't think we really have any excuses for our midfield or backline if they are healthy.
