In Tacloban, men, women and children tread carefully over splintered remains of wooden houses, searching for missing loved ones and belongings. From the air, television footage shows trees pulled from the ground by their roots and ships washed ashore.
Not one building seems to have escaped damage in the city of 220,000 people, the coastal capital of Leyte province, about 580 km southeast of Manila.
Survivors queue in lines, waiting for handouts of rice and water. Some sit and stare, covering their faces with rags to keep out the smell of the dead.

Don't really want to follow the coverage of this one, you know the aftermath is messy and going to get messier as the country struggles to cope.

Always feel for Filipinos, they are usually really lovely people but they just seem to have rolled a double 1 in the game of life, so much shit goes down there.

So it turns out that my girlfriend's brother and sister are missing in Tacloban. We're trying to find out if they're ok but there's no communication. It's absolute chaos there right now... Can't imagine what she's going through.

All the best man.

Any word yet, mate?

Good luck, I wish them well

It took until page 28 of The Sunday Times to even mention this, front page was Beyonce. What the ******* ****.

Surprised more hasn't been made of it given the reported death toll.

It sounds like it's on a catastrophic scale equivalent to the 2004 tsunami and the Japanese tsunami last year which both got a lot more media coverage.

Those events both happened well after everybody had done their Christmas shopping (and advertising).

Not that I'm suggesting there is a link here. Just throwing it out there.

I was in Banda Aceh city a couple of months ago, the pics look so similar to the aftermath of the Tsunami.

Banda Aceh is pretty much rebuilt now and a thriving city once again - human beings are amazing creatures. Foreign aid helped, but the people there did the hard yards. Though many of the new inhabitants come from elsewhere, for obvious reasons.

Best of luck Yellow Feathers

Yes. Just got word that her family in Tacloban are safe. Their house was one of the only ones to survive... Looking at the photos and footage I can't fathom how anyone made it through that. I don't think I've ever been so relieved/happy in my life to hear that they survived.

Going to Tacloban on Thursday. Not sure what I'm in for but will try to help as much as I can whilst I'm there.

It really is shocking the amount of coverage this has received.

Welcome to the modern world, and the modern disgrace that is journalism. The most important items are celebrities, gossip, celebrities, sport, presenting news like it's a sport (so you can pick a side to barrack for), celebrities and gossip.

Genuine news? Scour the internet. You will not find it on television.

I'm not sure what your issue with the WA media is LTG, personally I reckon stories such as John Worsfold partaking in the New York marathon is worthy front page material.

In all seriousness I'm just grateful they even bother to include a World News section at all.

But yeah 10,000 people at least likely dead in the one city alone should be big news whichever way you look at it. Megan Gale's ultrasound results unfortunately have taken precedence today though.

(Currently on a free trial of The West hence knowing all this, would never actually pay for it).

Yep.

Watch the evening news on almost any given night, and you'll get an extended puff piece on an irrelevance like the intricacies of Orlando Bloom's love situation.

"Oh yeah, and in passing news, another 81 people died in a suicide bombing in Karachi last night."
