Toast Supporters Dinner Function

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

I had the pleasure of attending the supporters (Big Footy Membership) function tonight. If you're not presently supporting a player by big footy, and have the means, highly recommend it.

I thought to give an account such that others have a taste of the night. Others such as johnno77 who i met on my table may also like to add....

I was teamed up with Conner Menadue. Humble young man, truly great ambassador for the club. Amongst our conversation:

  • Leaders such as newy and foley surely missed this year. Had so much impact on game day and during the week
  • Got caught out a few times last week running to the wrong spots. Is difficult to get to the right places. Working on it. trying to get better.
  • Always backed his pace and skills. Foundation there, just needs experience and (self belief - well that's my bit based on our convo).
  • Didn't have a clue draft day which club he may go to. So glad to go to such a great club as Richmond. Mentioned Duggan went o WCE. Didn't say he'd hate that, but very glad got to go a great club
  • Dogs supporter growing up. Still huge soft spot. Shattered for Bob M
  • Choco hard on the young players. Is intimidating at first. But obvious he loves the boys and just wants them to get better.
  • Cricket and basketball also as a kid. Was quite good at them.
  • Always wanted to succeed as a footballer. Always been the dream.
  • Lids has been a huge loss. So much leadership on the field. So skillful. Really missing him this year thus far. Says he's kicking now and not too far away.
  • Training very hard today. Tired. LIving the dream however so can't complain too much
  • Has an interest in recruiting and will start to work with the recruting team as 'work experience'. Likes/wants to understand the process of player selection
  • Not too fussed about not being able to go out with mates on Friday, Saturday whatever. It's part of being AFL footballer
  • Step up from TAC cup or VFL is so huge no funny in terms of game speed.
  • Always been a good runner - did alot of running as a kid. At AFL level however still needs work. Also size.
  • We agreed Jack R more skillful that given credit for (eg on left side etc);
  • Jayen Short chat - said he hit his first kick sweet. New was goal as soon as he hit it. Was going to put to top of the square but everyone said to kick it. Mostly choco from the boundary.
  • Andew Moore - not real noticable difference between port and RFC. Training similar, lots of stuff the same. RFC more traditional. Port started from scratch really (I loved this comment - particular the 40+ premierships or whatever that trot out)..... Went out of his way to say good bye to me. Was very nice gesture.

That's what i remember. Hopefully gives you some insight.....

Sounds great hopefully one day I can get the funds together to sponsor a player. Thank you for the run down of your night.

Oh, i forgot, also mad mention that Dimma is great coach is is obvous how much he loves the boys and the club. Just wants sucess. Not much raving and ranting more measured and trying to make them collectively better. Seemed 100% genuine in this dialogue.

Sadly I didn't get to meet Terra or Jonno. Did get a chance to meet rfctiger74 though. I can confirm he is not in fact either the devil or Ned Flanders. But he will no doubt confirm that I am a muppet :p

Was a great night and well run. Thanks to DrMike for organizing it all. Didn't really understand the scope of what you do for us mighty keyboard warriors. And all from the other side of the country.

I was seated with Kamdyn McIntosh and Chris Yarran. I hope KMac becomes a star. Personality wise he's Jono Brown/ Luke Hodge. Just a genuine good bloke. We didn't talk all too much footy. But here's what I learnts. Yarran as well was a great bloke. Level headed.

- McKenzie still isn't back at the club.
- Yarran explained his planta fascitis. Essentially he has had it for 18 months and it would give him minor discomfort then be fine again then discomfort again. But everyone agreed (as in Cfc docs and physio and same at rfc) that it was manageable. Flared up so they decided to bite the bullet and go into surgery. About 4-5 weeks away and will obviously play through the VFL.
- Still has a deep attachment to Carlton. Situation wasn't for him at the end but doesn't have any animosity against the Blues.
- Said Grigga was very chirpy when he first came across.
- Doubt if McBean will play this week. I was told by his sponser that he has to play multiple great games. 3 good games in a row and we may see him.

EDIT Also Yarran is a fantastic mentor to Rioli. You can tell he looks up to Yaz, and Yaz clearly does right by him.

All in all great night. I will say this, after a loss some people suggest that because they pay for a membership they have a right to success. There are some people who for a long time give so much more to the footy club. Some sponser players for their career. Some sponser multiple players. Some even help mind the players' pets on occassion. For mine they deserve credit too.

Glad I went. Go Tigers!

Another sponsor of Kamdyn is Mel. She was probably on your table. Great mate. She goes to most interstate games and will be in Perth in a few weeks.

Yep she was on the same table. Mentioned you as well. Cam across as a genuinely nice and sincere person and a faithful supporter.

I rocked along as well. It was a cracking night. Was seated next to Jayden Short. There seemed to be a bit of a mixup with the seating arrangements, musical chairs ensued and when the music stopped, Terra Tiger had been left out! They sorted it out pretty quickly though. All the players (and other player sponsors) went out of their way to introduce themselves.
Tried not to talk too much footy with Jayden but he's a ripping young bloke, very friendly. He said he usually car pools with Lambert and Marcon into training each week. In case anyone had any doubts, he confirmed that they were best mates. Told him there was a Big Footy thread dedicated to their friendship and that they should check it out.
Food was good, venue great and beer was cold.
Had an early start today so left a little early.. TerraTiger, how did we go in the quiz?
Mood was good on the night also. You forget what it's like when you haven't been around a footy club for a while that the troops rally though the week and get on with it rather than moping around. Big Footy could learn a lesson there. (And so could I)

Yep can confirm the time that is required to do this after doing the first 2 years and being in charge of the bank account that money goes into that it takes a lot of time coordinating it all especially organising names etc for the events that we get to go to.
Sponsor dinner is a real fun night that I've been lucky enough to have attended on previous years so in sure you all had a great time.

Sounds like another top notch night for those who attended. Always love reading the great insights about players and their backgrounds. Good to hear morale is holding up as well. :thumbsu:

Yes Kiwi, Mel McLaughin is a great sport. Blushes a little, but a great sponsor.

Haha. You idiot Noel! I think you've met Mel when you've been my guest in the various functions you've attended.
