Going into 2026, we can't have a coaching panel that still looks like this:

Chad Cornes - Forwards
Tyson Goldsack - Defensive
Hamish Hartlett - SANFL
Matthew Lobbe - Ruck/Development
Jason Williams - Development
Cameron Sutcliffe - Development

This would be close to the worst coaching panel in the league and an indictment on Koch, who in 2012, said what this Club needed was a fully-funded football program.

So who can we go after to support Josh?

I've seen Hodge's name mentioned - would be great to have someone with a hard edge that was actually successful on the field to look after the midfield.

It might be a good idea to have an experienced Senior Assistant, similar to Richardson in 2013 and Walsh in 2014.

I would go after Don Pyke, personally but others may not agree.

Who you got?
This is the worst coaching panel in the league, it is simply a Hinkley boys club. All of them need to be removed prior to 2026.

I would be intrigued to see what Chad, Trent, Justin, etc are doing to get better?
Is Hammer undertaking a coaching or leadership course? Are they visiting coaches and leaders or getting people in? Do they have mentors they check in with regularly?

It feels like the constant improvement required to stay at the top, red queen theory, hasn’t been enacted at port.

I asked Richo about Sutcliffe and Lobbe specifically at the AGM. Zero.

Ken would feel too threatened by them if they tried to improve

We need coaches in the box that other clubs would want to take, not also rans that nobody gives a stuff about

I looked at geelongs box and it has rahily (potential head coach); king (potential head coach); kelly (has coached at afl before) and not to mention Chris Scott

and then there's our bunch of no hopers

if carr rolls out with everything exactly the same, hes in big trouble

It works. It’s just not good enough.
Agreed GP that game plan regularly comes unstuck when the oppo brings the heat, and particularly in finals.

At the Gabba yesterday Melbourne had to win an insane amount of hard ball gets and often in 1 v 2 or 2 v 3 situations particularly when the game was on the line in the last 10 minutes of the game which enabled them to continually send the ball into their forward 50, and even when a brisvegas defender got the ball he was regularly forced to kick to a pack on the outer wing where Max Gawn was lurking, and he kept taking marks and sending it back where it came from.

Given a similar set of circumstances the Power line up with kern coaching would have lost that same game by at least 3 or 4 goals.

Back to the thread question.

I agree that Josh Carr needs to get the reins before the season is over so he can assess if any of the current assistants are worth keeping.
I also agree that a Richardson or Walsh type senior assistant is essential.

Felt like he was good at managing the defensive lines but absolutely horrendous as a midfield coach. The worst I've ever seen and that's saying something. Do you think if he'd stayed in defence we'd all see him differently and he might still be at the club? Why did he move in to mid?

He's a good coach. But he absolutely wears everyone thin very quickly. It's why he never lasts long in any one spot during his coaching career.

2026 Dream Team

Janus - Forwards
Expat Power - Defensive
Willsy10 - SANFL
Strand Victor - Ruck/Development
Travis Boak - Development
Drugs Are Bad Mackay? - Development (Huge Coup)

I wouldn’t blame Carr if we roll out the same deadbeats next year.
Koch and co control the purse stings and they’re as tight as a fishes arse.

For a start Carr could construct a gameplan based on sound principles, I suggest a good defensive underpinning should be its foundations.

I firmly believe it's the fundamentals that have let Ken down time and time again. Our goalkicking has been horrendous for a number of years and have cost us many games including finals. Our general skills have been pretty average - and our fitness in the last few years has been putrid.

Addressing the coaching staff (not just the bloke at the top) is paramount to success. Ken had some great assistants and support staff over time, and they culminated in pretty decent attempts at a premiership. Yes we never got there, but got close a few times with those assistants.

We have got close on the back of a handful of players carrying the side.
We’ve had too many deficiencies down back and up forward to be a serious challenger.
Basically if an opposition team breaks even with our midfield they’re home and hose.
If you want to be serious about winning anything you need forwards that kick goals and defenders that can work as one unit like it used to be with the old Port teams.
We have players back there that can’t even bend over or stick a tackle.

I asked Richo about Sutcliffe and Lobbe specifically at the AGM. Zero.

Sutcliffe’s glow-up after getting delisted in his prime by one of the worst Freo teams of all-time should be studied.

Again, can only assume he’s mates with Davies from their time together at WWT because there is literally no other explanation.

Why? You're misrepresenting what it's about.

Why, you ask. Well, my original post would be different precisely because it wasn’t on the actual topic.

What has Goldsack done to merit this confidence? And who the hell is even Williams?

And to think people used to complain about Bassett.
Spot on!! Not renewing Bassett’s contract was a huge mistake. I’ll stick my head out and say that he was a defensive genius. When he exited Port he left ex-colleagues there who had a lot lessor talent in coaching than him.

Disagree, we've been within a kick of a GF a few times. If we had major deficiencies in defense and forward, then we wouldn't have been that close.

I do agree around the midfield break even, however luckily it hasn't happened often in the past (aside from this season)

If you look at some of the finals we lost, you'll see that there are some that we absolutely got outplayed and had no chance - but others that we threw it away by not taking our chances. Even the ones we did win, we did that with horrible goal conversion.

Key finals losses that were clearly due to missing opportunities:

2017 vs WCE - 10.16 vs 12.6 (WCE Shuey duckgame)
2014 vs Hawks - 13.16 vs 15.7

But then you look deeper into matches where momentum matters - and you see games like against Sydney in last years PF

Qrtr time: Syd 4.0 vs 2.3
HT: Syd :9.1 vs 4.6
At this point, our heads drop and we continued to miss chances to bring us back, whilst they continued to kick accurately.

These are all just examples of times where Hinkley's gameplan has coached a winnable game, yet our players skills and more importantly, goal conversion has let us down. Yes, that is also Hinkley's responsibility - so it's not defending him, but it is saying that the gameplan is not what has cost us over time (yes of course, there are games where it has cost us)

After Ken,

Support is a term i use loosely.

Josh will get no sympathy from me if he cant correct this train wreck.

He knows what he is up against, hell he is part of the problem to some degree.

He will get my support as I cheer him on to swim instead of sink, that is about it from me.

Do we know this as a fact? Hinkley would have had no prior relationship with Chad Cornes and Goldsack - and Sutcliff was here as a player for very long.

It feels more like a management directive to me, Ken in earlier days seemed happy with all the other assistants we had.

Virtually all of our assistant coaches are here due to being from Adelaide or having a wife wanting to live here.

It's pathetic to limit our net to meeting one of those two criteria.

I don't disagree - my question is more whether this is a "Hinkley" boys club, or whether this is what he's been given. People love to blame Ken for anything and everything, and it's often misguided.
