It was a weird almost farcical match at times. The scoreboard attendant giving us a goal after Port kicked one. And a last quarter that went nearly 40 minutes.
we were musing that they had put an NRL noob up in the scoreboard, so he was waiting for half time at 40 minutes. ;)

Swans very sluggish for much of the game, except for a damaging burst in the third quarter where we blew the game open. Weirdly whilst losing by 5 points we spent much of the final couple of minutes just chipping the ball around, which is perhaps indicate of the way they approached things in that last stanza.

some great highlights though. a couple of 50 metre plus goals from Dempster & Davis. A Grand Final replay speccie from Leo Barry. Brett Ebert snapping a couple of late goals in the forward line; he'd have been nearly best on ground tonight I feel.

The Swans still have a fair bit of work to do to get things up to scratch for round 1. A lot of their footy was horribly undisciplined. Some of the errors, especially trying to be cute out of defence, were atrocious & were duly punished by a ort team who probably should have won by more, given the amount of footy they had & the shots at goal they missed.

Time for a cool shower. see you all!

The visitors kicked the first three goals of the final term to overturn a three-point deficit at the last change on their way to a 14.3 (97) to 14.8 (92) victory.

Sydney kicked the last two goals of the match, but ran out of time.
For Port, Brett Ebert kicked four goals and Damon White chipped in with three, all in the first quarter.

Sydney's scoring was headed by Nick Davis with three goals and Darren Jolly and Barry Hall two each.

Port led for virtually all of the first two and a half quarters and were up by as much as 28 midway through the second quarter.
Sparked by White's three early majors, Port carved out a 10 point lead at the first break.

The visitors kicked five goals to three in the second quarter to swell their advantage to 20 points by halftime.

The previously lacklustre Swans found some rhythm and played more directly in the third quarter, kicking 5.1 to 1.2 in the term.
Majors to Nathan Lonie Greg Bentley and Ebert pushed Port 15 points ahead in the final term.

COACH Paul Roos said his team had paid the price for sloppy disposal into the forward line as the Swans narrowly failed to overhaul Port Adelaide at Telstra Stadium in Sydney on Friday night..

The hosts kicked the last two goals of the match, but simply ran out of time after the visitors had kicked the first three goals of the final term to overturn a three-point deficit at the last change to eventually win 14.13 (97) to 14.8 (92).

Roos was generally happy with his team's performance but said poor disposal outside the 50 had probably cost the team victory.

"When the ball was between 60 and 70 metres out from goal we just turned the ball over," he said.

"If we hadn't have done that I thought we probably would have had a big tick against the night, it was just that final disposal that was pretty sloppy."

He said he was encouraged by a strong effort from full-back Leo Barry and a good showing from midfielder Jared Crouch in his first outing in nine months.

Barry Hall and youngster Simon Phillips were other Swans to shine.

Nick Davis headed the Swans scoring with three goals, while Darren Jolly and Hall bagged two each.

Port led for virtually all of the first two-and-a-half quarters and by as much as 28 points midway through the second quarter.

But the previously lacklustre Swans found some rhythm and played more directly in the third quarter, kicking 5.1 to 1.2 for the term.

Roos reported reported no injury worries, though he rested prize recruit Peter Everitt for the final quarter because of hamstring tightness.

Yeh i don't think this means anything. People forget that in a practise match, even if a team plays there best 22 the coach will most likley try out different game styles and play players in different ways or positions.

Just let him boast about the practise match. Thats the only one they'll win.

Thanks footy block for the article.

Spida looking solid.

Young players impressive

The Swans didn't have enough good players in their final practice game against Port Adelaide to win according to Michael O'Loughlin.

However, the full-forward believes there were several positives to come out of the five-point loss - mainly the fight-back in the third term.

"Our third quarter was a big positive as we moved the ball around, took it forward and took a few more risks," O'Loughlin told sydneyswans.com.au of Friday night's game.

"We were pretty slack in the first half and were 28 points down (just before halftime) so to come from a few goals down and get back into the lead at one stage was pleasing.

"Of the young guys I thought Matty Laidlaw did some great things when he came on, and gave us a lift there at one stage and Simon Phillips once again was impressive.

"Of the older guys I think Goodesy (Adam Goodes) was ok, Kirky (Brett Kirk) is always solid but there were not many good players.

"There was enough for the fight-back and to hit the lead, but as we always say if we haven't got enough we won't win."
While there were no premiership points at stake, the Swans wanted a victory as they prepare for the season opener against West Coast.

"We desperately wanted to win the game but Port came to play footy, they came prepared to play and I think a few of us didn't take that onboard," he reflected.

"There were probably only a handful of guys who turned up to go to work and the rest of us didn't.

"I don't know why. It was just a mindset thing, a mental thing, and we better get over it quickly because we are taking on the reigning premiers next week."

The focus now shifts to the final fortnight of training for the players and coaching staff.

"We are desperate to win the first couple of games and there is no secret about that," O'Loughlin added.

"Everyone knows we have started off pretty slack in the last few years and we have really struggled so now all our attention is about this first game coming up.

"We have two weeks of training to go and I know they will be pretty solid so we are really looking forward to playing the first game."
