Could Nick Murray become the new Scott Stevens?

It's a little known fact that Scott Stevens kicked 6 goals in a losing final having been swung forward after a dismal beginning to the game down back. He was regularly swung forward or back in times of need and was a favourite of mine.

Swingman Stevo wasn't the only ace up the sleeve either. Old "no moves" Neil actually had a few tricks like these in his playbook and was unfairly maligned for his rigidity.

Remember his Plan B?

Ricciuto to the goal square

Nathan Bock was on his way to winning us the 2006 elimination final with some late long bombs before the worst umpiring decision in history (until last Saturday's deliberate howler) stalled our charge at the final centre bounce. Bock was another who swung forward on occasions.

What about the Angry Bassett cameos at full forward? Though he may have just headed up the other end of the ground to find his mouthguard.

We used to have some game breaker/desperation move options. Nigel Smart was the 90s poster boy for this skillset.

Anyway... when Nick Murray has swung forward this season he's clunked a few nice grabs.

I don't like to engage in hyperbole but he reminds me of peak Carey.

Stefan Carey but still, it's a start.

On Saturday he headed forward to keep Max Gawn honest and he did more than that - pulling down a strong one-on-one grab (we hadn't outmarked Gawn all game) at a crucial time and nailing him HTB soon after.

Most Crows fans still have nightmares of Messrs Embley and Hunter being swung deep forward at times of need. Talia, Hartigan and now Butts have never seemed the type.

Could Murray be our New Stevo?

Another Stevo, the great Mark Stevens was another Crows swingman.

look.. if we are going to be brutally honest.. he had a shocker on the weekend. was terrible all the way through the game up until the last 5-10 minutes..

did those last 5-10 redeem it all for him?.. maybe..

Honestly, that's unfair.
Gary Ayres invented that play. He also invented the concept of tagging Martin Pyke (with Stenglien) in a midfield that boasted Voss, Black, Lappin and Akermanis.

Could Nick Murray become the new 119 game Crow Scott Stevens?

I think it's an undervalued role and I personally would be trying to pick someone of that ilk (on the bench) most weeks. However I reckon the man for the job is Worrall as he seems to have (based on SANFL pedigree) more aptitude for this position...but we should definitely be building this flexibility into our match-day tactics.

Appropriate timing that Swingman Stevo popped his head up recently too

Especially this week given the Tigers having Lynch out, will most likely have CCJ or Chol in but if they go small it gives us more options.

I think Worrell would be the ideal swingman for us too. But let's just get him in the team first. I can't believe we haven't been able to give him a game this year

We tried to force Fog to play defence, does that make him a reverse swingman?

Is that the right term? back swingman?

In the Petrenko game (8 years ago yesterday) Truck was wheeled forward in the final minutes. All he really did was concede frees until he worked Petrie under the ball allowing it to spill into Pup's path.

I think a few may be getting a bit carried away with Murray. Did some good things last quarter but was very average for the rest of the match. Agree he seems more of a forward than a back but I feel Worrell will make a better swingman than Murray. If we keep not playing him we will see him being a swingman at another club most likely.
