Sydney overturn 36 players in tumultuous off-season

Sydney finally announced their 2007 list today, with 16 new faces after a crazy off-season cleanout by coach/president John Crumbs. After finishing last in 2006, changes were expected, but nothing to this magnitude!
Even after the poor finish, Sydney found themselves struggling to make the salary cap after recruiting some big names early in the trade period, and the result is a rookie-list reduction from 6 to 2 players in 2007.
The big name signings unveiled today were headlined by Nick Dal Santo and Dane Swan, with Chris Hyde, Tim Clarke and Daniel Ward recruited to bolster the midfield ranks, and Brian Harris signed to fill the vacant full-back void left by the walking out by Dustin Fletcher. Dane Swan was acquired with the Number 1 Draft Selection, along with Nick Maxwell.
Players to have left include Heath Black, Matthew Lloyd and Chris Knights along with the retirements of Rohan Smith and Dean Rioli

BREAKING NEWS!

Sydney changes symbol
To be known as Sydney Broncos

Sydney today announced that they will no longer be known as the Swans, and that from this day forth, they are the Sydney Broncos.

Coach Crumbs decided that the club needed a change of direction, and to start by re-inventing the clubs martketing symbol as a start.

"Nothing against Swans, they are a graceful bird, but we need a symbol of power. The Bronco is just that" Crumbs said.

More as it comes to hand...

Re: Sydney Board 2007

Broncos gallop into first

Sydney Broncos have beaten the Brisbane Bears to go to the top of the AFFL table, after finishing a long way last in 2006. The tumultuous off-season trading and delisting seems to have paid off early, with 3 wins from 3 games.

Coach Crumbs wasnt getting excited though, rolling out the cliches, saying the Broncos "wouldn't be getting ahead of themselves" and would be "taking it a week at a time"

This week, Sydney shoots for 4 in a row against Adelaide

Sydney Broncos announce bevy of new players

New players to the Sydney AFLTM Club this season are:

5. Daniel Bell: The back-pocket player was traded from Melbourne as part of the Brian Harris deal.
2. Mitchell Brown: Another player involved in the Brian Harris deal, Brown will be looking to secure a key forward post during this season
19. Sam Gilbert: Traded by Essendon to the Broncos, Gilbert was sought after by coach Mark Larson, and should play in the back line all year
32. Cheynee Stiller: When the East Coast decided to move to the Gold Coast, Stiller decided he wanted out, and found a home in a slightly more southern location. Stiller is expected to be a midfield fixture all year, replacing the man he was traded for, Troy Selwood
23. Jake King: Another player chased by Larson, King showed glimpses of being another 'rookie-list star' last year while playing for Coburg (formerly Richmond). Will play half back/wing.
6. Matthew Bate: Offloaded old man Wirrpanda, and picked up a player 8 years his junior in Bate. Being groomed as a potential Full Forward
4. Rick Ladson: Ladson was traded from the Gold Coast for Adam Pattison, who found himself on the Sydney list for less than the duration of the trade period! Ladson is expected to be a star signing straight away for Sydney
9. John Anthony: The confirmed Eighth Round selection for Sydney in the upcoming Pre-Season Draft, Anthony was not re-signed by Collingwood, and was scooped up by Sydney, who see him as a long term tall backman
15. Tim Callan: Seventh Round selection in the Pre-Season Draft, Callan was given a lifeline by Sydney, another project Tall back
41. Nathan Carroll: A player who only 2 seasons ago was a Sydney Swans player, now returns under the Broncos banner. The first of Sydney's late draft Tall Defender trio of picks
1. Adam Simpson: A bargain selection in the Fourth Round, Simpson will be the experienced head of the Bronco midfield this year, and maybe next
22. Jason Blake: The complete bit player, who can play forward and back, as well as doing ruckwork, and simply running as a big midfielder. Will pinch hit where required.
16. Scott Stevens: First Round Pre-Season Draft pick for Sydney for a player who is beginning to come of age and would be looking to hold down Centre Half Back
24. Scott Harding: Speedy midfielder/forward who will be working hard to break into the side during the 2008 season

Sydney still have one 'live' selection in the Pre-Season draft, and have looked at numerous options without yet making a clear cut choice as to who they will select.

Re: Sydney Board 2007

Sydney welcome Alan Toovey and Stephen Tiller to the squad via the rookie draft, and welcome back Andrew McQualter, who was delisted at season's end, but re-drafted in the PSD

Sydney are also believed to be disappointed at being thwarted of the chance to use their last rookie pick as no deadline for the draft was specified

Re: Sydney Board 2007

Larson "disappointed" with news leak

SYDNEY BRONCOS coach Mark Larson is dissatisfied with the way news of Jason Johnson and Damien Peverill's future came out.

Broncos chairman John Crumbs yesterday told the Sun Herald that the two players had been informed they were not part of the club’s future. Larson confirmed the players would have "limited opportunities" at AFLTM level.

“I’m disappointed the way it’s played out, particularly for Jason (Johnson) and Pev (Peverill), because they’ve been fantastic and superb players for the footy club,” the second-year coach said.

Larson agreed it would be a “utopia” if the chairman left on-field matters to the coach

“The chairman of the footy club has the chance to speak on behalf of the footy club at times,” Larson said.

“What I will do at the next board meeting, I will raise the scenario (of how the news came out), do it through the manner and right channels."

He reiterated that he felt for the players.

“I’m disappointed for Jason and Pev the way’ it’s played out … it’s not fair.”

Sydney on the slide, losing 3 on the trot after a 5-game winning streak

Matches to come against Brisbane and Rottnest, both sides battling for a finals spot (with a group of 10 teams!), and against the struggling SWR.

In other news, Dean Solomon has become the Sydney Broncos games record holder, with 68 :thumbsu:
