Sylvia's Transformation.

12 months ago, Sylvia barely got a game on merit. He was injury-prone, looked lazy on the field and selfish.

Fast-forward to the end of '09, and is there a better player on our list?

Funny how things change. Credit to Col for getting his head in the right place, cut the occasional brain fade out of his game and he might just live up to the billing consistently.

I would say he's the best player at Melbourne these days.

Could he end up being the best draftee from the 2003 batch? I know Cooney is a star and has a Brownlow next to his name, but put Sylvia in a dominant side (Melbourne in a couple of years) and he'd be elite.

It's funny because I had him well and truly written off earlier in the year.

Incredible. Has the ability to be our best midfielder if he isn't already. Got everything a gun mid needs = great tank, good fast hands, booming kick, remarkable strength overhead and is a tackling machine. And has that build where I can see him seriously scaring blokes.

That's the thing, he probably is our best midfielder. Not our most consistent, Beamer has him there, but in terms of his foot skills, marking and goal-kicking, no-one comes close.

At the start of the year, he wouldn't have had a place in our starting rotation, let alone consider himself the best of the lot.

Stay fit, stay out of trouble, stay at the club. That's all I ask.

I hope he can carry this form into the preseason and improve on it next year.

he's looking at a high place in the bluey for this year. next year he could win it and push for all australian honours

And the type of player who could win a Brownlow - flashy, kicks goals, takes marks, has blond hair.....

No.

On his day he is one of the best players in the AFL & this year he has shown a desire to get to that level. Remember his game against the Hawks, what was it 37 possessions & 4 goals, epic!

I think he will always be an up & down player but that is his nature, he reminds me a lot of Stevie J. All we want is for him to close the gap between best & worst. If he can do that he will be one of our best week in & out.

Great season from Col except for the 3 weeks out.

I pray he wins the Bluey, or at worst finishes 2nd behind Davey.

If Bruce finishes higher than Col I will vomit.

1st. Davey

2nd. Sylvia - if he puts together 22 x his best he will win the Brownlow.

3rd. Bruce

4th. Green

5th. Morton - Will be top 3 in 2010.

6th. Frawley/Moloney

This is just off the top of my head, no prior thought.

Sylvias form and consistancy improving two-fold to a level we knew he had, but thought we might never see.

Probably our biggest positive this year ahead of;

Daveys form and consistant higher level of posessions.
Grimes in what is effectively his first season looking like a 250 gamer in the making.
Morton continues to develop at a very high level.
Jurrah looks like he will draw crowds and kick goals - biggest bargain of the 2009 draft.

I bet Sylvia will get the most Down-low votes for mad monday too. All round gun!

We always were hoping Sylvia would catch up with Mclean. I dont think any of us could see it coming as far as it would. Lets hope He continues on and Mclean recaptures that 2006 form. Just watched the elmination final against the saints last night, I miss that stuff from Mclean. His clearance work was exceptional.

He is an absolute star, and probably the most talented player on our list.

He possesses all of the attributes required to be a top 5 midfielder in the AFL, he just needs to make sure he is consistent and keeps his mind on the job.

Next year I wouldn't be surprised if he started to be considered among the AFL's elite.

At the start of the year I had Sylvia on my trade list, but now he is a much needed player. Hopefully he can take it up a notch next year, I knew there was a reason we took him at #3.

Colin Sylvia for AA next year, no question.

And at least some others among our ranks who could also reach that level...

A Hawks friend of mine loves Sylvia and asked me whether I'd accept his hypothetical trade: Roughead for Sylvia + pic 2.

I'd have to think long and hard about that!

I hope your kidding.

Terrible trade.

Wouldn't even swap Sylvia and pick 2 for Franklin.

Na, as much as Id hate to lose Sylvia, i reckon Roughead would complete our forward line as a big, deep marking target, allowing Watts, Jurrah, Bate etc swarming around him.

As good as Sylvia is, and how much potential he has, I still believe great KPFs are more valuable than great mids, plus Colin is two and a half years older than big Rough.

Would have to be considered.

Well, why not keep Sylvia and draft Butcher at 2? I guess it's the guarantee of getting a proven player like Roughy, then a promising player like Butcher. I'd prefer to keep Sylvia in this sort of form, he's well on the way to being the star player we need.

i've just had a scary thought, can someone please calm my fears: what is the status of Sylvia's contract? Cos i can see him buggering off to GC next year and winning a Brownlow up there instead of here. shitshitshitshit.

Agree that we NEED Colin. Would be really playing with fire to try any kind of trade involving him...

He plays the kind of game play, that when he is on fire, he is almost elite. He is a great kick, has a strong mark, strong body, and gets a lot of the ball. He also finds his way forward and has the ability to kick a bag.

The only place i think he may be lacking is speed, but he makes up for that with his ability to break a tackle. He is one of the few players i would pick to win, when taking on the opposition.

He has stated previously that he wants to stay with Melbourne for the rest of his career, so hopefully there won't be any worries surrounding him in that respect.
