IMO, I don't think our club can afford to have two players with major deficiencies in their disposal in the 22 that run out each week. In light of this, who would you rather have in the team?

Disposal: Both tend to have high loopy kicks which lack any penetration and do next to no damage. If anything, they do damage to their own team to the benefit of the opposition. However, Cook's kicks have marginally more penetration (only ever so slightly more) plus he can kick equally high loopy kicks with both feet. Verdict: Cook

Hardness: Cook has proven he can get the contested ball. However, this area is Symes' forte. You can never question Symes' hardness around the packs. Verdict: Symes

Pace/Athleticism: Cook has a genuine burst of speed which unfortunately we have rarely seen put to good use this year. In addition, Cook is also pretty capable overhead. Symes, unfortunately, appears to be a plodder. Verdict: Cook

Finding the ball: No brainer here. Symes is a ball magnet. Not one of Cook's strengths yet. Verdict: Symes

Leadership: Symes is a lot more mature and seems to have a good head on his shoulders. He's also in the leadership group. Cook pretty much still a kid at this stage. Verdict: Symes

Decision Making: Symes generally makes good decisions when he's not under pressure. However, when he is under pressure, he's prone to a monumental clanger of the highest order which results in several gnashing-of-teeth threads appearing in BF overnight. Cook hasn't really demonstrated much in this area. Neither here nor there really. Verdict: Draw

Probably a few other areas which we could get into which I won't be expressing my non-expert opinion about.

Not going to be popular but who give a **** with that but I went ‘neither’

Symes couldn’t get a game at Port for a particular reason (he is an unskilled player by foot and hand) and cook just doesn’t show the skill level necessary for an AFL football. I guess if I had to say categorically say one, it would be Cook for his unknown level of improvement he could potentially have. We know what Symes can offer and in a young developing side, it’s not what i want.

lol, for who? he'd be lucky to play another game this year.

Jaensch will probably get back in before Cook, Sloane looks like he is settled in, Martin is about ready to go he's a better footballer as well. Dougy who was always the up and down yo-yo type is in now.

Cook because he is younger and has plenty of time to work on his deficiencies. Where as Symes has been in the system for some time now and still hasn't improved enough.

You should have had another category: Potential

Cook would take this one. He's only played a handfull of games and could have a lot of improvement left in him. Symes is probably never going to get better, will be an average player at best.

No need to tell me about Sloane, I was the one pumping his tyres ahead of Cook in the first place.

Cookita will gun it up for us.

Symes quite easily. He looked slow out there Saturday but it was his first AFL game in a while, he just needs to step up his intensity that little bit more from SANFL to AFL level and he'll be great. Much more quicker in the head than Cook.

Cooky will be an exciting electric little gun quite frankly.

Quite frankly this comment says alot about the value of your opinion. Can't wait to read your "expert" in depth analysis of how we are going to win the 2011 premiership - you can never have enough toilet paper.

You'd really wipe your bum with your monitor to express discontent with a post of mine?

On this, how hard is it to improve someones kicking skills? Is there hope for Cook to improve his skills or will he always be a turnover waiting to happen. Symes has not improve his skills and he has had numerous years in AFL now. I remember though, Bock was a very unreliable kick when he began his AFL career and is now a very reliable kick. How does it work?

Sustained exposure to playing at the highest level is what improves it. You learn to better cope with the pressure. Your errors are exposed to a national audience which helps create the want to improve.

The absolute worst thing you could possibly do was to send someone back to a lower level and hope that it improved there. Simply won't happen.

I agree with that. I worry this hasn't worked on Symes. He could be a real asset with a quality kick.

Symes for mine. Don't judge the bloke on his 1st run for yonks. If he can recover his best form after a couple of games, he will be a great asset. His kicking is nowhere near as bad a depicted on this board.
Oh, and I do think Cook will make it as an AFL footballer. Has a little way to go yet. A bit more SANFL experience and a good pre-season next year and he may well be in our starting 22 next year.
