Tackle count for Richmond over the first month of football has been like so:

40 vs Carlton 49
41 vs St.Kilda 55
50 vs Western Bulldogs 45
33 vs Collingwood 48

Richmond's tackle count seems fairly low. You would think that a side coached by Damien Hardwick would be ruthless in this area.

Anyway, I just want to hear your thoughts (I don't really have a point to make) as to why we seem to be so low in this area? Do you think that it's reducing energy expenditure and they're instead trying to force teams into making errors using a different method rather than forcing the tackle?

I would like to see more tackles made of course, but it doesn't look to be a huge deficiency as such. I'm just surprised, that's all.

Not fairly low, but pitifully low imo. We just havent found the balance between uncontested free flowing football and solid defence. We laid 4 tackles in the 3rd qtr, thats simply unacceptable. Our game atm is not conducive to high tackling pressure and when we come up against high intensity sides like today you cant just expect to flick a switch and lay more tackles. We need to improve in this area bigtime, coaching staff need to get the balance right.

Lack of tackling and pressure is what's holding the Tigers back atm. That's what wins big matches like today, and finals. The pressure the Pies applied to us today is what what we need to do every week.

I'm worried that the Tigers have become a team of down hill skiers and flat track bullies.

I agree with the lack of tackles is a concern. I remember TW said in his tenure that if you dont tackle then you need to bring a lot to the table. DH said in the presser it was poor but didnt elaborate about what to about it. To me the coaches are letting the players off the hook here by allowing such a low count. Regardless about front of centre turnovers, pressure acts you need to evelope the whole lot with LOTS of tackles. if we did this then we would be a genuine top 8 team. As it is we are a maybe.

Players should be told 1 a quarter is a minimum and set your bench mark at this. It may also be that we havent got the fwd running patterns in balance and we are just too tired to tackle? Either way we need to get this right and not let the player off.

13 players yesterday with 1 or no tackles. Shocking.

1 Tackle:

Tuck
Houli
Newman
McGuane
Grimes
Grigg
King

0 Tackles:

Jackson
Ellis
Vickery
Chaplin
Rance
Morris.

Most of those there are supposed to be very good at applying defensive pressure. Fair enough our Defenders, Collingwood's entries into the forward fifty resulted in marks, but bolded players needed to do better.

Would love to see our tackles inside 50 too. Seems most teams tackles are down atm. Hopefully it is something we really pick up on, 20 a quarter is achievable.

Teams that don't work both ways generally are and that's exactly what we're not doing atm.

Thanks for providing the differential in a plus and minus fashion for those who couldn't do the maths in the OP. This thread is now wide open for anyone!

Tackle rankings this year:

Fremantle - 69.2
West Coast - 68.8
Brisbane - 68.7
Essendon - 67.2
Hawthorn - 65.0
Sydney - 62.0
Geelong - 60.8
Collingwood - 60.2
Gold Coast - 60.2
Bulldogs - 59.0
Carlton - 58.8
Port Adelaide- 57.0
North Melbourne - 56.7
Adelaide - 55.0
St Kilda - 50.8
GWS - 49.0
Melbourne - 48.3
Richmond - 41.0

Miles behind the pack. Most teams are laying 50% more each game. Last year the Gold Coast came last with 54.0 per game (this includes winter games though where the tackle count goes up).

For me the midfielders are the ones letting us down here. All the key guys are down on last year:

Cotchin - 2.75 down from 4.86 (-2.11)
Deledio - 2.75 down from 4.64 (-1.89)
Tuck - 1.0 down from 5.64 (-4.64)

We should be getting 15 a game out of those 3.

Yesterday was disgraceful, a goal the Pies kicked late I think it was Swan, we one armed flopped about 8 in a row and our Captains effort was the worst

Our pressure was disgusting against the pies. As for the 3 weeks preceding that it was reasonably good.

Interesting how the commentators are saying that the tackle count is low in the Essendon Collingwood game on now, and the intensity is as high as it can be. It's half time and currently. 21 tackles Essendon, 19 tackles Collingwood.

Perhaps it's a game style thing.

PS Why the hell did Cloke clunk them against us and in this he is dropping chest marks!!!

I hope Dimma isn't chopping and changing his coaching to appease some stats being chucked around. Thought we were finding our way alright in the first few games. Lets stick to plan A for awhile and see what happens.
Would be nice to be the a feared tackling team but our pressure has been good.

Collingwood seemed to be able to dodge and fend off our tackles easily as well. We need to make sure our tackles stick otherwise it will cost us.

most of the collingwood players do powerlifting and conditioning, all have extremely strong core and leg strength.

Just to put it into perspective, last week, our worst quarter we had 4 tackles. Yesterday, the Pies only laid 3 in the first quarter, and they pride themselves on pressuring the ball carrier.

It just goes to show that EVERY club is still adjusting to the game, and while ours are a bit of a worry, most clubs are in the same boat.

Thanks Grock that does put it into some perspective, though regardless we have been weak around the contest.
With Freo leading the way with the tackle count the boys are going to have to have a real crack tomorrow or we will get beat up and run all over out there.

I agree that tackles is not the only thing, and an intercept mark is better than a spoil and tackle, but to be the worst team is not a good thing.

Would be good if the coaches/leadership told every player to try and get at least 1 tackler per quarter as part of their playing benchmarks. 1 tackle per player a quarter by 4 quarters and we would get some handy numbers (compared to what we have at the moment).
