It's a weird statistic that's for sure. The best sides this year overall are Swans, Freo, Hawks & Port and they should all finish top 4. This is how they stack up in tackles:

- Sydney 3rd
- Port 5th
- Freo 10th
- Hawks 18th

This highlights where Hawthorn hurts opposition teams - with there incredible foot skills in general field play.
Whenever a Hawks ball-carrier gets in trouble, they're able to pinpoint a pass....forwards, backwards, sideways, up, down....while the entire opposition team is trying to jump on their head....then hit a team mate on the chest barely 15m away. We struggle to do that.
We've played them where we beat them in contested ball, but they racked up the most ridiculous uncontested marks count I have ever seen, and they won the game. This also highlights the Crows lack of outside run and chase.
Tackling is very important, and it makes a huge difference with the Crows....but a lot of our poor tackling stats are a result of not being able to close down and catch opponents in the open. In the wet (e.g. against Port), this worked in our favour - slows down quick opponents.

Bring the same desire and technique as the Showdown to Friday night and I'd almost pencil in a win.

As the Crows tackling is my bugbear, I watch it pretty closely and over the past couple of games I have seen more tackling of one of the arms than two hands going to the waist leaving the hands free. Have to play man on man with the Hawks and not let them get into open space. Quell their half backs, and Bruest in the forward line and have a massive chance.

Unless you're an almost pure outside team with silky skills like Hawthorn that can keep it off the opposition, tackling is a function of intensity. As an outfit I don't think many would describe us as intense. Rory's the exception but we have too few players that bring his level of intensity. When we show up to play with intensity we have no issue with tackling, like in the showdown.

Trouble is we rarely bring that intensity. This is why I've gone off Danger as captain and switched to Sloane. Hopefully Cameron and one or two others coming through will help get our intensity and tackling up.

Right now, it's about 50/50% we seem to bring that intensity at home games now, but away we tend to struggle. The saddest thing is when we do bring that intensity, we have made good outfits play like rabble (Port after half time, Collingwood).

Definitely agree with Sloane being captain as well.

Interesting infographic from AFL.com.au looks at tackling: http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-07-18/the-inquirer-playing-the-man

We're 17th in terms of tackling efficiency (61% are effective), above Hawthorn and below Fremantle. League average is 63.5% effective.

Our most effective tackler is Luke Brown with an efficiency of 67.8%. Most other clubs have a tackler with an efficiency in the 70%s at least
