Sorry to hear about your friend .. :(
I am not entirely sure if they 'have' to.

But if they stopped you, they'd be pretty ****ing weak!!

As a senior manager and an ex-nurse, I have always been very forthright in my views on these sorts of things. We don't work to live, we live to work and family & friends come first at all times.

I encourage staff to support their family & friends in times of need and/or illness and death because let's face it, we are only on the planet once.

In this instance, you should be attending the funeral and not worrying about the consequences. If this was a very close long term friend (not some blow-in you met the other night at the niteclub) then get your Arse to the funeral and say goodbye. If your boss hauls you over the coals because of it, then he is a **** !!

Sorry to nitpick, but aren't you trying to say you work to live, rather than live to work?

Sorry to hear about your loss, Spidey.

Sorry to hear about your loss Spids.

I'm actually studying Industrial Law and we were discussing if employees could attend funerals this week.

The deal is, your employer will only pay you for a days work whilst you are at a funeral if it is your parents or brother/sister or someone who is living in the same house as you.

For some reason, there is no mention of grandparents or cousins. I guess you will have to ask your boss and explain the situation.

ta everyone

Interesting, we had a girl who would run off to the hospital all the time to visit ppl and someone was always dying and she'd cry at work then be able to leave and go to their funerals etc etc. I think the family only rule is fair enough otherwise it can get ridiculous.

Sorry about your friend, Spidey. :(

Now this from 'Mooster's how to have fun at funerals handbook.'

A couple of days before the funeral, buy some raw fish.
Put the fish in a glass jar and leave it out in the sun.
Tightly lid the jar and smuggle it in the funeral with you.
During the funeral crack the lid on the jar
When you notice people looking around and you know they've caught the smell, say:

"They need to get this guy in the ground quick."

Sorry about things too Spidey, hope ya boss yet ya take time off work otherwise he is a heartless bastard.

yep you do have to let people know if you are going to be away for anything.

Sorry to hear about your friend.

My brother was killed in a car accident - I would have torn my boss a new arseh*le if he had said I couldn't have time off for the funeral but as it was he was very nice about it and gave me two weeks.

Having spent a far bit of time supervising and some in HR I can tell you that if a manger/supervisor will not give their staff time off for a funerral then you should start looking for a new job. Any compnay that has that policy doesn't value it's staff and obviously believes that they are replacible.

well at least it is expected with cancer so it doesnt really shock people as much as an unexpected death but i still think its better to get euthanasia and die with dignity rather than let yourself go to the point where you cant function properly

same reason as 99.9% of people die...cancer
That's sad. Commiserations to you and your friend's family, Spidey.:(
