Hi Guys,

found this on foxsports. I'll admit I haven't read the fulla rticle but from what I've read he fancies himself to take over Bass... I think he'll find some pretty stiff competition there!!

Nathan Bassett's retirement leaves gap for Crow Brad Moran

By Scott Walsh
January 19, 2009 BRAD Moran says he is the man to replace Adelaide favourite son Nathan Bassett in defence this year.
Former Kangaroo Moran played only seven games for the Crows last year after injuries slashed his first season at West Lakes.

The versatile tall debuted in the round 16 Showdown against Port Adelaide and shot to prominence with four goals in just his third game, leading Adelaide to an eight-point win over Carlton in round 18.

He also proved a handy back-up to leading ruckman Ivan Maric after Jon Griffin succumbed to a hip injury late in the season.

Moran was recruited in late 2007 as a key defender, with a view to fill the void of Bassett, who retired last year after 210 games in 11 seasons with the Crows.

And after a year bullet-holed by hand and hamstring injuries that left him at "the crossroads", Moran believed his strongest position in Adelaide's line-up was in the back half, next to full back Ben Rutten and defending club champion Nathan Bock.

"The idea last year was to fill in Nathan Bassett's spot this year, but with the way footy goes now you've got to remain versatile," Moran said.

"If a forward falls over or a ruckman falls over, how many numbers we've got to select from will determine where I play.

"It would be good for me to stay down back and then come into the ruck when they need me. I'd like to be able to play somewhere and say that's my position but at the moment I'll play anywhere.

"With Nathan Bock and Truck (Rutten) down there I'm left to play the third tall, or on the quicker players as well.

"We've got Griffo and Ivan Maric as good, solid ruckman, plus Kurt Tippett up front as well. In an ideal world it would be me playing defence but it's not always going to be that way."

Now 22, Moran shifted to Adelaide after playing just three games in three years with North Melbourne.

The Roos drafted the 199cm rugby convert known for his speed as a "project player" with pick 58 in the 2004 draft but failed to show consistent faith in their English-born giant.

Moran's move to West Lakes filled him with faith of a fresh start, until he broke a bone in his right hand during an early trial match for SANFL club West Adelaide.

Just a week after making his return he strained a hamstring, ruling him out until opportunity knocked with Griffin's season-ending hip injury.

"It was fairly interrupted, I'd never had a year like that before so it was hard - very hard," he said.

"I hate being on the sidelines. I was itching to get out there.

"I had a word to the coach (Neil Craig) and I knew as well as he did there was a good chance I wouldn't even play last year.

"I came to the crossroads of my career where I was thinking 'gee, this year's gone pretty downhill'. I'd spent three long years at the Kangaroos and I didn't have the greatest time there - constant setbacks, constant adversity and people telling you you're not good enough, you won't be playing until 2010.

"It was a big test. I had to focus on what was appropriate, and wasting energy on being frustrated wasn't."

Moran, who overcame groin soreness early in the Crows' pre-season, expects 2009 to be a better year.

Just days before Christmas he proposed to partner Alicia, he has expanded his off-field role to part-time modelling and plans to start a business.

"I'm pretty happy at the moment. I've got a few things going on this year," he said.

"Football is coming along and hopefully I'll be able to play more solidly this year, not so much looking over my shoulder but looking forward."

Brad was recruited with the view of eventually developing him into a tall defender, his height, pace and agility makes him ideal for this role especially against the quicker talls.

My only question mark is his agression in the air when attempting to spoil...

The other issue is not to many teams these days play three quality talls up front

This is beginning to look really good. Remember how very useful Pitman was in our glory finals as a defensive tall. I must get out those DVDs and watch them for the 15th time.

Interesting he never nominated himself as a tall wingman, I wouldn't mind him in that role.

Personally I have a lot of time for Moran, though he is probably the furthest behind of our four big men. I'd love to see him really come on this year.

I prefer him in the forward line ahead of Tippett. He actually runs to the ball and seems to know where it will be. But he could play anywhere.

I still prefer Tippett up forward to Moran. Tippett is still learning and is not as natural but if he reaches that level he will be devastating, whereas Moran will only ever be "just good" up forward in my opinion.

Either way I'm willing to be proven wrong by Moran going forward and becoming a dominant key forward! :D

That is the problem. Forwards have to be naturals IMO. Problem should be solved with Walker, but will need another tall down there, if Hentchel (our only other natural forward after Walker) struggles Moran is more a natural forward than Tippett. Scott Stevens even more so. Maybe swap Moran with Stevens.

If Griffin and Maric continue to do well in Ruck, Hentchel and Walker run the forwad line and Moran down back. I cant see a place for Tip. Bit of a luxury. Or Stevens may be on the sidelines:mad:.

Can't say that I'm the least bit surprised to read that Moran plans to take over Bassett's position. I remember the 2008 MMC campaign, where he and Bassett were basically job-sharing. Bassett spent 50% of the time on the ground and was replaced by Moran for the other 50%.

He certainly has the height, mobility and ability to do the job.

I think Tippett's lack of natual instinct will be offset by his ability to crash through packs. At least, that's what I'm hoping. We'll see.

i think it would be handy to have the extra tall in our team, so if we get a injury to 1 of the ruck we can always bring him up and use him in different spots of the ground as well.

hi guys and girls i havent done too much posting lately (or ever really) but this article made me smile because i did my lineup for a few weeks back 2009 and had him in the back pocket. I havent posted this team yet but i will get to it soon.

Moran was originally recruited by the club to ultimately play Bassett's role taking the 3rd tall.

Form permitting, I would expect him to start the season there, although Stevens plays the role well and is also a contender if not required elswhere.

Added to that is the wild card in Kite, who out-performed expectations by a large margin last year.

While I expect Moran to start the season there, he'll have to play well to retain the spot as there is plenty of competition for it - a good thing. :thumbsu:

I certainly prefer him down back as i like his ability to run the ball from defence. He could make a resting ruckman type become a bit of a liability and I think he has the agility to be able to play medium as well.

Might also be able to pinch hit in attack a la Adam Hunter.....

I prefer Moran up forward over Tippett. Moran has alot more pace of the mark and knows where to lead to but then again Moran doesnt crash the packs and get physical like Tippett

Tippett and Moran play different roles up forward for the reasons you mentioned. Moran uses pace to get out in space. Tippett ensures that most pack situation in the forward line either results in a Tippett mark or a spilt ball (and spilt pack). It was mostly spilt balls last year but i think he will start taking those marks that he would only just drop. You could see he was slowly learning how to get out on the lead. Once he gets better at this he will be a very big asset to our forward line. Especially with someone like Walker swooping on the ball, dodging 2 opponets and slotting the goal.

Or if we find a small crumbing forward, that would do it.

Walker swooping on the ball, dodging 2 opponets and slotting the goal.

I cant wait to see Walker playing for the crows and 2 opponents? why not make that 3 lol

don't think he has the discipline, application or smarts to play a defensive role.
he is a guy who likes to run, get free, create and fly at the contest.

he'd play far too loose, and back himself inadvisedly to go for a gallop. not his biggest fan, but he does have good attributes. He'll make it as a free ranging ruckman, or tall wingman/mobile forward to stretch defenses. if he's going to. imo anyway.

saw nothing that suggests he could play tight on a man.

I think he has the pace and mobility to give breaking the lines across centre a shot ala Bassett. Craig usually gives this role to someone in the back half and it could well be him.

He did this a few times last year and Justin Madden came to mind.

He just has to get just as smart and raise his ability at bit.

I think the AFC have definitely noticed a modern trend in forwards and recruited Moran to combat this. With flooding so common place these days clubs are tending to have at least one very tall forward in their structure. Think players like Hale, Tippett, Franklin, Kossie, Ottens etc. These players are all around the 200cm mark. If Moran can make it as a defender then he is the absolute perfect match up for these players and that would certainly make me more confident on the eve of a Hawthorn match for example. I would really love to see Moran given 1st crack at Franklin this year. If it dosent work then we can just chuck Bock back on him but its certainly worth trying. I know im getting very much ahead of myself here but on paper they are such a good match up that it could be the new Carey/Jackovich battle:o;)

Yes I agree, and my other concern re. Moran in the backline, is that I've yet to see him lay a decent tackle.

I do like him running with the ball out of defence though.

Why? Bock has the points on Franklin, why would you change a working match up? Maybe keep Moran as a back up, but really Bock's done the job previously, so he gets first dibs next time. Only time I would consider it worth trying, would be NAB cup/trial match, but even then Franklin doesn't play much of a role if he'll even play at all.

You'd change it because Bock is far better at running out of defence - let Moran blanket Franklin, you let loose Bock. Have Bock blanket Franklin, you let loose Moran. Who would you rather have running out of defence? Sure shut him down, but don't waste more talent than you need to do it.

IIRC Bock had a career high 35 possessions on Franklin, pretty sure he doesn't need to be released, also whilst Moran may have the athleticism for Franklin, I'd question whether he'd have the smarts to go with Franklin anyway, I'd be happy to be proven wrong though.

Jack of all trades, master of none. At the moment anyway. Defender, forward, back up ruckman, wingman(!)...

Hopefully he is able to settle somewhere. Very difficult to play consistent football when not playing a consistent role.

I just hope he manages to stay out of the medical room this year so we can start to see what he offers us.
