Great team Quietasamouse. Feel sorry for Savage but no space in that line up at this stage. Hopefully he takes his chance after injuries/suspensions and cements a spot in the team.

No room for Savage buddylebo23?

its kinda funny seeing the teams that people put on... having basically the exact same players that didn't perform last year, or people complained about being SLOW...

My team for Saturday:

FB: Puopolo/Cheney Gibson Guerra
HF: Bruce Stratton Gilham
CC: Savage Mitchell Young
HF: Lewis Franklin Rioli
FF: Osborne Roughead Whitecross
RR: Hale Sewell Burgoyne

Int: Bateman Renouf Birchall Sub: Murphy

I don't think Ellis warrants a spot. If he does... its a the Sub position, and as a Forward if he were to come on.
Ladson... unless he shows some more vigour and desperation, he isn't in the best 22
Smith... shown a little, but needs to build confidence in BH first as a dasher... in the mould of Youngie
Cheney... i am not sure who i would prefer more at the moment... he or Puopolo... think he has shown a little more.

SAVAGE MUST GET A CHANCE! awesome name too... i mean just the prospect of him ripping through a side and getting a headliner would be enough to get him into this game ;)... Shane...Savages the CROWS! muahahahaha

BTW to BUDDYLEBO23: I don't know about you man... but there are a few other players i would want replicated in my side... before Jordan Lewis. Not saying i don't love the guy... but i'd probably prefer 2 hodgies buddies riolis strattons burgoynes first! :D

Gibson, Gilham, Guerra
Birchall, Stratton, Ellis
Burgoyne, Mitchell, Young
Bruce, Franklin, Rioli
Osbourne, Roughead, Whitecross
RR: Renouf, Hodge, Sewell

Int - Hale, Cheney, Lewis, Murphy

Unlucky - Puopolo, Cheney, Shiels, Smith, Savage.

Can't find a spot across that centre line for Bateman, and I think Isaac Smith will take his role.

Murphy, Pops, Cheney and Goo all fighting for the same spot.

Lewis and Sewell are interchangeable. Can't find a gig for Shoe.

Bit of a fluff piece but maybe suckers will get a call up.
The age once again showing its quality as a newspaper...
Draft picks Isaac Smith and Paul Puopolo and second-year player Shane Savage are other young players ''in the mix'' for selection, according to Hodge.

Savage is in his 3rd yr. Although this info is hard to find. I had to look on the Hawthorn website to find it. I don't want to talk myself up, but who would think to do that. :p

But yes, it was nothing more than a puff piece.

B: Guerra Gilham Puopolo (no Murphy, lack of match fitness/practice)
HB: Hodge Stratton Gibson
C: Savage Mitchell Bateman
HF: Osborne Buddy Burgoyne
F: Rioli Roughead Whitecross
Foll: Hale Sewell Lewis
Int Renouf Bruce Birchall Sub: (Shiels)

That's my prediction of how it will all pan out.
No Bailey, no Murphy, no Ellis.

No Youngy either?

Hmmm, missed that one.

Where the hell am I going to fit him into the side?

This competition for spots is awesome.

Bruce, Shiels, Savage, Puopolo and Hale all deserve to come into the side based on pre-season form (my opinion). Fitting them all in is a challenge.

I agree, all definitely deserve a go.

From your team I would put Young onto the wing, Bateman be made the sub and Shiels out (which sucks because the kid def deserves a crack).

I just have a feeling this will be the year we will really see Youngy step up. I think his long kicking and ability to break the lines will be crucial. Hopefully Savage can do the same on the other wing too.

Like your side though :thumbsu:

With the newspaper article mentioning Suckling as a very good chance, according to Hodge, I wonder whether we will see more guys in the team who are elite kicks, to try to break up the flood/press/cluster/zone/blah/blah/blah?

If that's the case, guys like Guerra, Suckling and even Laddo will be heavily considered.

How good does it feel to be days away from the real footy? The fridge is stocked and I can't wait!

For what it is worth, here's my crack at the team for round 1:

Cheney, Gilham, Guera
Gibson, Stratton, Birchall
Young, Mitchell, Burgoyne
Bruce, Franklin, Osborne
Rioli, Roughead, Hale
Renouf, Sewell, Lewis

Int: Birchall, Ellis, Whitecross (Bateman - Sub)

NB: Murphy, Savage and Shiels are all very stiff to not be included.

I know that there is not too much new blood in the team, but I believe the club will stick with tried and tested players in round 1. Hale, Bruce and Cheney have all played AFL footy and will not be overawed.

If players do not perform after 3-4 weeks, I expect players like Savage, Shiels, Smith, Puopolo, Murphy, Bailey and Lisle will come into contention.

I am most looking fwd to Bailey, Shiels and Savage getting lots of game time in 2011...the trouble is, who do you drop?!?!?

A good position to be in compared with 2009/10!

Roll on Saturday night! :D

You have Birchal in twice. Personally I am not sure he will line up at all in round one. He is a slow starter and a game in the 2's may do him good with Suckling taking his spot.

Savage / Shiels will take Ellis' spot in your side with Bateman in the actual side and Smith as the Sub.

Other than that pretty good I think.

I know Guerra is normally our designated kick-in, does anyone think Suckling could take his job?

With the kick-ins probably, but not overall. Guerra is a good presence in the back line, smart footballer, good defensively and competes well in the air. He also seems to be in fantastic form (from what I saw down in Geelong against Nth. Melbourne). Goo is a long way ahead of suckling.

FB: Guerra - Gilham - Murphy
HB: Bruce - Stratton - Gibson

Solid back 5 with Bruce as an ideal retriever/distributor. Unfortunately lacks the ability to impact contests defensively but best we've got. Will swap with Mitchell 50/50 in my opinion.

CE: Young - Mitchell - Franklin
RR: Renouf - Burgoyne - Sewell

Bit different. Honestly I think having Franklin in the middle is a good ploy who along with Renouf offer strong get out of jail cards for our backline to kick to. Renouf may be a sub par ruck and kick at this stage of his career but last year he started to show he could take a handy grab.

HF: Lewis - Roughead - Rioli
FF: Puopolo - Hale - Smith

Bit different again. Having Hale and Roughead in the forward line makes for a less than imposing twin towers but should be efficient enough to contribute. Both Puopolo and Smith offer pace and tenacity to grow their teeth for the game.

IN: Savage - Shiels - Ellis

Players who have impressed in the preseason so deserve a shot and Ellis. Ellis is the ideal interchange player as he is able to influence many contests he goes to, not necessarily impact them but definitely contribute.

SUB: Birchall

An ideal midfield injection or alternatively a utility player. Birchall needs to start being forced to take on players and roles.

Guerra Gilham Suckling
Gibson Stratton Birchall
Young Mitchell Bateman
Lewis Franklin Osborne
Hale Roughead Rioli

Renouf Sewell Burgoyne

INT: Savage Ellis Bruce Whitecross

This is my team that I reckon will start round 1

Hodge & Murphy would be starters however they are both not match fit yet

Suckling I put in because of Hodge's hint that he may play, otherwise I would put cheney or puopolo there most likely

This really excites me because with the additions of Bruce & Hale as certain starters and the emergence of players liek Savage & Whitecross, we all of a sudden look like we have some quality depth

Players missing out who are unlucky: Shiels, Ladson, Cheney, Puopolo, Smith, Schoenmakers

Plus not match fit players like Hodge, Bailey & Murphy

EXCITING!!!
:)

For those that are interested, this is our Round 22 team that got up against collingwood:

B: Brent Guerra, Stephen Gilham, Thomas Murphy
HB: Brendan Whitecross, Josh Gibson, Ben Stratton
C: Chance Bateman, Sam Mitchell, Clinton Young
HF: Shaun Burgoyne, Lance Franklin, Cyril Rioli
F: Michael Osborne, Jarryd Roughead, Carl Peterson
Foll: Brent Renouf, Jordan Lewis, Brad Sewell
I/C: Campbell Brown, Xavier Ellis, Rhan Hooper, Wayde Skipper
Emg: Rick Ladson, Liam Shiels, Ryan Schoenmakers

Have bolded the ones that probably won't be playing. That's quite a bit of turnover.

I think that should be the round 1 team assuming Hodge is out. Suckling instead of Cheney if they are looking for more attacking player to take pressure off Goo. As far as I can tell, that is the form team.

When Hodge and Murphy return from injury (inside word says they will not play) will Savage lose his spot in the team?

This is what I think our best 22 looks like:

B: Stratton Gilham Guerra
HB: Birchall Gibson Bruce
C: Young Lewis Bateman
HF: Burgoyne Franklin Osborne
F: Hale Roughead Rioli
Foll: Renouf Hodge Mitchell

I/C: Sewell, Murphy, Ellis
Sub: Whitecross

My thoughts on round 1 team:

B: Stratton Gilham Guerra
HB: Birchall Gibson Bruce
C: Young Lewis Bateman
HF: Burgoyne Franklin Osborne
F: Hale Roughead Rioli
Foll: Renouf Sewell Mitchell

I/C: Shiels, Puopolo, Ellis
Sub: Whitecross

Edit: Savage and Cheney would be next cabs off the rank.
