This is a little long winded but it seems to be the major topic for debate lately.

It’s been interesting to read everyone’s views on the ruck situation leading into the finals - ie experience vs development etc.

This year has been an extraordinary year whereby we have had a large number of injuries but we’re still in a position to challenge for the flag. It will be interesting to see what happens from here in terms of selection and how the club manages the return of some more senior players – ie does the club return the “names” to the side – or stick with the personnel that has got us here?

From my perspective – all things being equal you would want to enter a final series with your best 22 on the park – (no surprise there) – so who are they and how do we evolve to that situation. The following players are clearly “First 22” players and should be removed from the discussion so we can focus at the margin.

Roo, Goody, Burton, McLeod, Stiffy, Edwards, Truck, Mattner, Bassett, Hentschel, Biglands, Doughty, Kenny, Shirley, Reilly.

That’s 15 players which leaves 7 places up for grabs discounting injuries of course.

This is where it gets tough to make objective decisions. You would think that the remaining 7 positions would be taken by

Ben Hart
Scott Thompson
Ian Perrie
Nathan Bock
Jason Torney
One of Hudson or Clarke
Possibly Scott Welsh.

That leaves the following who would be extremely unlucky to miss as they have played some very good football during the year.

Massie
Bode
Van Berlo
Stevens
Porplyzia
Knights
Maric
One of Huddo and Clarke
….and maybe toss in Skippy and Vince.

The harsh reality is that these 17 players at the margin will all be fighting for 7ish spots and the priority for the club for the next 7 rounds is to come to a landing on our best 22. Unfortunately during this process there will be casualties in terms of non-selection – but the match committee would be derelict in its duty if it did not head toward this optimum team situation.

This week we have seen Maric and Porps the victim of this squeeze and I suspect there will be a few more unlucky players over the coming weeks.

  • Will Perrie and Welsh regain their positions in a pretty efficient forward line.?
  • Will Hart be able to pick up where he left off?
  • Will Thommo’s form become more consistent and worthy of keeping other small forwards/rotating midfielders out of the side?
  • Can Bodey tip out someone like Welsh or Thommo?
  • After Stevo’s reinvention as a CHB, is there a spot for him in the side?
  • Is there only 1 spot for either of Torney, Massie, and Van Berlo?
  • What then of Knights and Porps – 2 guys who are very much stars of tomorrow?
  • How will Huddo return and is 12 months off enough to give Clarke the edge at selection for finals – and where does this leave Maric and Meeson?

There are some very tough decisions to make – ultimately injury and form will help make the answers a little clearer.

So – for those wanting to develop youngsters over the next 7 weeks – I think that is very important – but surely the first order of business for the club is to solve the conundrums I’ve outlined – and set the club to win this year’s flag if possible rather than looking to next year’s development right now. If both can be achieved at once – great – but putting our best side on the park over the next 2 months is more important IMO

Thoughts? – ridicule ? – name calling?

I think Thompson and Hart are definates any day of the week. In the clearly first 22 players category.

Accurate assessment and certainly a good problem to have for the selectors. There are a few questions/issues that need to be answered:

How well does Bock recover from his back injury?
He looked super smooth towards the end of the Port v Eagles game last week but back injuries are notoriously tricky to get over. Ottens has never been the same player since he had all that trouble with his back.

How well does Perrie recover from his knee injury?
He's a CHF who covers a lot of territory, wouldn't think he'd have enough impact to warrant a spot unless he was absolutely 100% fit.

Will Ricciuto move into the midfield at any stage?
I would have expected him to spend some more time in there by now if it was part of our September plans. The answer to this question directly impacts on whether Welsh gets a game, as it would be hard to fit both in the forward 50.

The form of Thompson and Bode
Both talented players, would be great to have in the heat of a finals battle but, sadly, have not absolutely stitched up their spot beyond doubt.

The resurrected players
Much has been made of Stevens and Massie's improvement this season, one of Craig's masterstrokes. Will be very interesting to see if the coaching staff maintains the faith in them or if they have just been keeping the seat warm for Bock and Hart.

Interesting question. For me, Bock is an absolute certainty to come back in at CHB. IMHO the guy is gonna be very good in a couple of years (providing back injuries don't kill him off). Also, I would much rather have Hudson in my lineup than Clarke (injury permitting).

One of the only things I don't like about Aussie Rules is this crap situation where you don't get a medal if you aren't on the ground on the day of the GF. IMO, anybody who contributes to the team getting to the GF deserves as much of a medal as the few lucky enough to be playing on the day. How ridiculous is it that Modra does not have a premiership medal considering all the work he did in getting us to the GF in 97 (or Roo for that matter)? As far as I'm concerned(and this view is reflected in all other U.S. sports) anybody on the team is a contributor towards that team's success and should share in the rewards equally. That's the nature of a team.

It also makes selection a little easier, since you aren't cutting anybody out of the rewards just because you are forced to keep them out of the team either by injury or (in the Crows case) too much talent for too few spots.

Yeah, I've been noting this as a problem once our players with Injuries come back - We don't have spots for them. I think Massie has done enough to keep his spot. Has played some genuinely good footy. Thommo is too good a player to drop. Hart is in our best 18.

Bocky has to prove his fitness is up to AFL standard, and then get it to crows standard :D

I would love to see Bode keep his spot. BUt I would also like to see Scotty Welsh back. Tough calls for Craigy but thats his Job I suppose. And we know he'll make the right calls.

The thing I really fear is there may be a few players wanting to leave the club at the end of the year due to lack of opportunities - Stevens would be shattered (and every right to given they way hes played) to be dropped before finals. A lot of our guys would be first choice players at other clubs.

I tend to agree with you - and when you become that definitive about players - it further tightens the vice (if you like) on the balance of that "fringe" group.

Yep, if you count Hart and Thompson as definites and assume we will go in with two ruckmen your list of 15 definities is up to 18. So essentially there are only four spots available for:

Bock, Perrie, Torney, Welsh, Massie, Bode, Van Berlo, Stevens, Porplyzia, Knights, Skipworth and Vince.

What's that saying? You don't have to be dead to be stiff.

exactly - and I guess the point of my original post was to illustrate the squeeze on positions and weigh up getting that settled against the luxury of giving developing youngsters a taste of senior footy to keep them interested.......

Me thinks we have larger aquatic species to saute.....

Hmmm... you've dangled the bait, so to speak. Did you want another 6 pages of back and forth on short term vs long term?

Notice I left the names of the two ruckmen out!

I've been a Kenny Mcgregor fan for a long time but I also think Perrie, McGregor, Bock comes down to maybe only 2 of them being in the side with the current structure (mainly due to Hentschel coming along so well and Roo being up forward as well). I wouldn't classify Kenny as definite 22 and Perrie and Bock not other than that Perrie and Bock are coming back from injury.

I'd hate to see Kenny miss the finals BUT if Perrie and Bock both come back and are playing their best football compared to Kenny's form this year.. who would you pick? Or do you have room for all 3?
