Hey guys.. im moving out of home and need to buy stuff for my apartment.. on top of the list is a television..

I haven't been able to find any easy way of comparing models.. I'm only interested in HD as UHD seems to just be not really useful yet or anytime soon and prices will go down eventually on that..

I mainly want a tv that is good for watching dvds... obviously television and playing fifa pretty much..

my budget is around 2500..
BTW the size i want is 65 inch.
any help would be greatly appreciated.. thanks

Go LED/LCD (Avoid 3D ;) ) Higher constrast and refresh rate the better.

Something from Samsung, LG, Hisense, Sony.

thanks!

but i find it hard to compare models and to kind of know which brand etc is better

for example.. are they all the same.. is there much of a difference? do i just go for the cheapest one?

Well you have the three main types of TV;

Plasma - These TV's have the brightest colours and the darkest blacks and are always cheaper but you have to worry about image burn in (if you leave an image on the screen too long it'll burn in forever)

LCD - Bit worse than plasma but doesn't burn in, the all round best tv.

3D - bucket of shit.

Then you have to ask yourself if you want a Smart TV or not.

Basically just shop around and find a few tv's you like and compare their numbers, find something that works for you i.e number of HDMI ports, thickness of the TV, warranty etc.

Often you'll find that a $2500 TV from Samsung is near identical to a $2500 TV from LG for example.

Oh and just as a disclaimer i don't know a heap :P

Ewww. 65inch + standard definition 720 broadcast = eye vomit.

Go for quality over size. 120hz Samsung LED.

Compare them side by side in-store, preferably with a SD broadcast signal as well as whatever HD demo loop they usually have running.

If you can, also get the staff to let you play with the remote and the on-screen display - each manufacturer has their own quirks for how they present stuff like the Program Guide on screen. Some are better than others.

When comparing TVs it's best to do so with things you'll actually watch, and I'm assuming you'll want to watch sport. The tennis is on right now for a couple more days, so watch that. If the ball looks like a comet then the tv is crap.

Normally they put on the latest Pixar animated film or some nature documentary in HD and they all look amazing. This isn't the case with "normal" tv.

Just had someone give me a big spiel about Samsung.

1) The screens on display are made in Japan. The one they give you to take home will be made in Korea or China.

2) The shop has a set list of videos they may show on the display screens so the negatives of the display do not become apparent. They may not put anything else on the screen.

3) You used to be able to tell from the serial number if a unit was made in Japan or elsewhere. They have now hidden that serial number so you cannot see it in the shop.

Still, they are pretty good TVs. I like mine with its apps, including YouTube, Plex, SBS OnDemand and iView.

I would consider the ability of said TV to play Matroska files (*.mkv)
Smart TV is handy too. Someone rocks up and you want to show them a funny youtube video.... piece of cake with a Samsung.
You can get those wireless keyboards with trackpad for about 30 bucks from ebay too.

Yeah this. Hate it when I go to watch a TV show or movie that is .mkv format and the TV doesn't recognise it.

Say the same with the PS3 and Xbox 360 not recognising NTFS and .mkv's.

1) Don't buy by brand, buy by model.

2) Don't bitch about 3D, anything bar the very base model will have it.

3) SD makes every TV look garbage, $400 - $4k. Don't blame the TV, blame the cheap ass Australian networks.

4) 100hz min, 200hz if you can afford it.

60 inch will look crap if your room is too small. Remember a 60 inch TV has the same number of pixels as a monitor, only spread out over a much bigger area.
I have a big room so will be perfect.

I ended up going for the samsung series 7 60 inch ..

Thanks for help guys
