TERRY Daniher is headed to his fourth club on his rocky ride through AFL coaching boxes.

The Essendon champion is expected to be one of two additions to Carlton's coaching panel for 2006.

Daniher, an assistant at St Kilda this year, and Footscray's Brownlow Medal ruckman Gary Dempsey will join the Blues in part-time roles.

Carlton chief executive Michael Malouf said last night discussions with the pair had progressed "pretty well", but could not confirm appointments at this stage.

Daniher spent the past two seasons with the Saints after a similar period at Collingwood. He previously was an assistant at Essendon.

Dempsey has worked as ruck coach at both the Bulldogs and Hawthorn.

While Collingwood and St Kilda both moved Daniher on, he seems a better fit at Carlton under Denis Pagan.

The Blues also went looking specifically for a former key-position player to help develop their various prospective key forwards and defenders.

"We're looking for a key-position player from a successful club who's interested in developing our young players," Malouf said.

Daniher played in attack and defence during his distinguished career at Essendon.

Despite Collingwood's decision to remove him after the 2003 Grand Final, he is credited in some circles with helping develop Chris Tarrant that year, when he finished second in the best-and-fairest.

"We've got a very, very young list; we've got a lot of young key position players we need to develop," Malouf said.

"In our review, we identified we had the least number of coaches in the AFL, and that we also needed to change the mix."

Pagan's assistants this year were Tony Elshaug, Tony Liberatore and Barry Mitchell, all midfielders when they played, with occasional contributions from Wayne Carey, who has crossed to Collingwood.

Mitchell, a former Swans rover, was coach of the forwards.

An announcement is expected as early as today

Malthouse was uneasy with Daniher at Collingwood for whatever reason, I think the CFC is very lucky to have him as he played over 300 games as a CHB and CHF. He can now go to work specifically on blokes like Raso, Hartlett, the O'hAilpins, Livingston, Thornton, Bryan, Deluca, Waite and Fisher.

Hopefully we pick up a ruck coach, whispers are Gary Dempsey at this stage - one of the all-time great ruckmen! He would definitely help French, Bryan, Deluca, Batson and the O'hAilpins.

collingwood needed a scapegoat for their GF non event- what better why than sacking an ex-essendon great

st kilda- also needed a scapegoat for their prelim final disasters. g thomas is a pea brain so he too looks for a scapegoat. didn't the entire coaging staff leave bar thomas and rendell?

i'll reserve my opinion on TD until the season starts, lets give the bloke a go.

I think they're good appointments, if we get Dempsey as well.

Having just said that... I think the game has changed so much recently that it'd be a good idea to get a good, recently retired, footy brain on board in the next year or so.

Not a dud coach. We dont know the full reasons behind his exists from the clubs. He obviously is a decent coach otherwise Pagan wouldn't take him on.

Neither.
He coached our VFL side. When we merged with Bendigo he was offered the job but didn't want to move his family. So he looked elsewhere and ended up at Collingwood.

He wasn't sacked from St Kilda, they just didn't renew his contract. Grant Thomas is obviously a control freak judging by how many hats he wears at the Saints. Maybe TD got a little too hands on for Grant's liking.

How can you say he is a dud coach? From reading the paper and finding out that he coached at 3 other clubs?

He is an absolute champion of the game and if he cant give some advice which the young blokes can take on board than ill eat my own @rse.

Good apointment for Carlton who in the past have had quite a few assistants from their own backyard.

I still cringe remembering Dempsey and Jeff Sarau kneeing the buggery out of each other late 70s, early 90s.

Over 600 games as elite players between them.

Has not got the job as yet, only been interviewed. Brett Ratten knocked them back to coach Norwood in EFL 2nd Div, not enough money compared to a 2nd Div club, cant fathom that!

Not withstanding that, I was actually quite pleased when i read the article in the Hun. Remember reading somewhere that he was given the kudos for Tarrants rise a couple of years ago. Surely this would benefit guys like Waite and Fisher.

Grant Thomas is an absolute ********er, the guy was in charge of hiring and firing at the saints.....sacked two great coaches including Blight, didnt install another coach but installed himself !!! When did he do this, after the saints had been through several seasons of TOP draft picks.........nice timing.He has had THE best team going around (equal to the lions) and STILL couldnt do ********e. The guy is a two time LOSER, absolute flake and will be found out.

Malthouse is ********er....end of story.

Sheedy is an absolute pecker, total tosser. So far up his own @rse its not funny..........cant beleive he has been at Essendon for so long their screwed when he leaves not becuase he is good, but just reliant on him.

I know a bloke who has played under TD's coaching. From what I was told TD's a great bloke but in terms of coaching he leaves a lot to be desired. Apparently his coaching addresses consist exclusively of "get in there fellas" and "hit 'em hard" kinda thing and not much else. He's everybody's mate though

Why was he sacked then? You seem to be in the know. What about his coaching was not up to standard? Why was he persevered with for a couple of seasons with each club if he had such obvious faults. If Sheedy had to tell Daniher to stand at the back of the box and keep his mouth shut and you know all about that, then why the hell were Collingwood next in line to nab him?

Maybe Daniher is a frustrated seniors coach in an assistants role. Maybe he is treading on toes and challenging the way things are done. Maybe our coaching panel could use him after all because they need to be challenged.

Collingwood have made a lot of mistakes over the years, this was just another one. But I heard this from a football person I trust and believe.

Sorry he wasn't sacked, he quit Essendon to look for another club after they wanted him to move his family up to Bendigo to coach them
