yep. i live in hobart and was in high school during his heyday, and a bunch of the girls suddenly started supporting the crows while he was carving it up, and stopped once he moved on.
it was like they were having an affair or something, and slinked backed to the teams they originally supported once the magic was over. i like to think there's still a pang of guilt when they're cheering on Franklin or Nicnat or whoever. yeah, it's good, but they've had better.

Was probly last year or the year before Bernie Vince was on the show Sam had no idea who he even played for, but I do agree it is quite setup, starting to get cringe worthy.

He plays all of that up. Sam is a very intelligent guy, and actually has a very good understanding of the game, he just plays up that he doesn't know other sides. The only reason he isn't still doing special comments, which he was quite good at, is simply because he couldn't stand watching the flooding/umpiring at the time, which the majority of footy fans agreed with, but commentators are too afraid to actually say.
Yeah, I have a lot of time for Sam. He's a dick, yes, but not the dick that he plays on TV, and he's a very intelligent man.

Just because he's not as thick as his character on the show makes him out to be, doesn't make him intelligent.
I always get a laugh when I see him switch into "serious mode" and address some random topical issue which he feels passionate about by way of a dedicated 60 second close up camera shot editorial. Just by virtue of him not being his normal sanctimonious self righteous self, the Footy Show die hards break out into raucous applause and cheering, convinced that they've just witnessed a moment of pure footballing genius and insight.
When really, all he did was not carry on like a w***er for 60 seconds.

What you see on TV is pretty much never the real Sam Newman.

This. Sam is a very astute judge of football, but is forced to play the clown prince role due to upsetting the AFL hierarchy on too many occasions. That's why he isn't on a network that is a part of the broadcast rights deal.
He would know a lot more than many who pass as commentators these days, I mean they let Robbo host a show on Foxtel and that guy is seriously clueless. He also does a lot of work behind the scenes for clubs and is still a valued ear to many football figures. Don't mistake the persona for the man, they are very different beings.

Nah the whole show is sh*t, unless you like hearing meatheads talk about everything except football. Footy Classified is at least a show that talks about football, if you can stand looking at caro's mug for an hour.Half of the show is shit then?
