I'm starting this thread because I only noticed something on the History sticky (correct term?)

Thanks for battling for us, Sammy. I feel like we've lost one of our toughest nuts.

I'm gonna miss Sammy, not to happy about this to be honest, the one thing the club does need is honest hard working players, the acquisition of Howlett probably ended things for him.
He'll get a go somewhere else.

Now we will pick up his nephew Jesse Lonergan. Kevin Sheehan rates him highly and is tipped to go late 1st round / early 2nd.

Been playing senior footy since he was 16 I think? Unsure, but he should be looked at by the dons!

No doubt that Lonergan has handled himself with class but the reaction to his delisting is really bringing a lot of stupidity to the fore.

Slattery shared every one of Lonergan's strengths and everyone of Lonergan's weaknesses and yet there is hardly a fan who is sad to see the back of him.

Too many of you are duping yourselves into thinking that Lonergan's output was anything but below par (which it very clearly was) because he was courageous. It is clear to me that Lonergan was fortuitously hidden out of view in the midfield and that Slattery did not have the same luck.

Just wondering what essendons fan reimers were. Seemed like he had a lot of talent. Think hel get picked up by a new club??
Not quite sure what you're asking, but most of us viewed Reimers as a bloke with a lot of natural ability but who just didn't work hard enough.

He also didn't seem to understand the defensive aspects of being a forward very well, or just wasn't very good at that side of his game.

I think he will get picked up by someone. Not sure if the Swans would be high on the list of likely suitors, though.

Yet I'd say one of the expansion clubs or freo will be his best bet

Yeah..thanks for passing through this great club of ours.

No shame in getting cut. Thousands of others have suffered the same fate.

But really..do we need to have a thread like this?

Where's Kyle's?...and Joel Reynolds'?
I liked watching him play because he was courageous. I'm a fan. I made a thread for these reasons. I hope that's okay with you.

Sam I forked out a few hundred dollars to fly down to Melbourne with my Carlton supporting friend for round 4. The week prior after our effort against Gold Coast and their effort against Collingwood I was quite worried indeed.

And then this happened;

Sam you made my weekend.

Thank you and good luck! :)

You've got to be kidding. Lonergan had far more strings to his bow than Slattery. Could play above his height well, had a superior foot/hand skill set, was more agile and was a far more flexible option around the ground.

Slattery was a negator...and eventually found he was left wanting in most of these tasks that he was set. He offered nothing offensively, was one sided and was invariably hesistant when making decisions. I don't think they are remotely comparable from a strengths perspective.

Like I said, Sam was hidden from view. It is a masterful bit of misdirection, I might add, evidenced by what would have to be the first time Lonergan has been accused of being versatile and of having agility in the same sentence.

Slatts is as hopeless a negator as Sam is a inside midfielder that is all I am concerned about. The only difference is that Slattery gets the blame for the losses because he is a defender when it is actually Lonergan and the other mids who can't offer the defence even the slightest bit of protection that expose the defence to battles that cannot be won.

Very strange point of view Bruno. most of your posts are pretty close to the mark i reckon but your miles off here.
Lonergan had far more impact of the last couple of years than Slatts. I dont think Slatts was to blame for our losses over the last couple of years - he didnt play enough for that to be the case.....And has far as Lonergan being 'hidden away' from accountability for his impact or lack of impact well that is utter rubbish - no one in this day and age gets hidden away, clearly he has been exposed for his shortcomings and they are probably part of the reason that he has been delisted.
On a side note i think Lonergan would be a great pick up for GWS or Gold Coast where his tough body and experience would really assist young developing players

I think Bruno's pointing out that both these guys are fringe players. I doubt Lonergan would have been cut if they thought he was more that.

I never said that the club hid Lonergan. The extent of his generally poor performances was not as obvious as it was for Slattery who had goals kicked on him and was subsequently bashed from pillar to post. That anyone would bother drawing any sort of distinction between the onfield output of the two tends to confirm as much (of course it is relative to the position that they played although I'd say Slattery was much more capable of playing in Lonergan's role than Lonergan is Slattery's).

Pardon the intrusion, but how do you think Lonergan would go at Geelong as mid depth in rotation with Selwood, Bartel, Caddy, etc. It seems you have guys have no question of his hardness and attack but that he seemed to get carried by the other mids.

If we have any midfield shortcoming, its in supporting Selwood with inside mids. Thoughts?

You could do worse.

He is far from the worst player I have seen.

I wouldn't even say that he is a poor footballer. If there is a role at a club, he could fill it.

But he has his limitations.

Not expecting a 30 and 3 each week, but as someone who sees a bit of mid time and adds some hardness. And for pick 79 in the draft.... what else can you reasonably expect....

And if there were any issues about him not trying, the chance at Geelong would be something he'd buy into....
