Worked out very well for Essendon. As has the Richards deal. Considering he wanted to leave also we managed to get a win from that trade.

If you were to ask Freo if they would rather o brien and solomon as opposed to riemers and houli they would prefer the latter every day of the week. Well done by dodora for picking up such quality late in the draft. 2006 draft looks like it will be a success. Just need Gumbleton and Jetta to join the party....

Ted Richards: 55 games for Swans.

Courtney Dempsey: 8 games.
Sam Lonergan: 8 games.

Sydney are way in front at the moment.

That's a rediculous way to look at it.

Sydney drafted a mature player who was ready to play senior footy. The bombers got 2 young kids who hadn't played senior footy before.

If you looked at it and said who would you have on your list, Ted Richards who is just a player or:

Dempsey who has the potential to win a Brownlow medal and will be crucial to our rebuilding process

and

Lonergan. Hard to say what sort of career he's going to have. Friday nights game was exceptional though.

Would have Dempsey over Richards at my club in a heartbeat and if you threw in Lonergan then the trade becomes so weighted to the Bombers favour it's a joke.

Some people's expectations of our players are ridiculous. Remember when Damien Cupido came along and we were all laughing at what a great trade it was. Fast forward three seasons and he's gone.

What if Dempsey only plays another 20 games because of injury ? Or goes to the Gold Coast. There are so many possible negative variables.

Swans are miles in front on this trade at the moment. Just accept it and re-assess in five years time.

Solly has been super in his two seasons at Freo. His output has easily eclipsed that of Reimers and Houli combined.

As Moo said, still far too early to tell. Lets look back in five seasons time.

2008 Solomon 8 games 15.7 possession and 2.9 tackles a game
Reimers 7 games 15.6 possessions and 2.7 tackles a game.
Houli 9 games 18.6 possessions 3.2 tackles a game.
Brock O'Brien 1 game 7 possesions 2 tackles

Houli and Reimers both look like are looking like two of the better late picks in recent years.

Having said that I am sure Fremantle are happy with how Solly is going. Win win for both teams.

I'd say that Essendon won in the Solomon trade to Freo, even though he was my favourite player when he was with the Dons.
I wonder how we would've fared if Dean Solomon had've completed he's intended move to Richmond a few years ago (before he was coaxed back to Essendon by Hirdy & the boys).

Also, even if Essendon and Freo hadn't swapped those late picks, I think Reimers would still have been a Bomber and O'Brien a Docker, but we will never know for sure. So I consider the trade to be Houli for Solomon, not Houli and Reimers for Solomon and O'Brien.

Not rediculous at all.

When you're trying to rebuild a side, inevitably you need to bring in youth. There's no doubt that Demps has the tools to be a star of this competition. Any good judge will tell you that.

When you are trying to look at youth then all you have are hopes and expectations built on the potential of the player. Dempsey has plenty of this.

By your logic, we shouldn't ever judge based on the next day as next year they might be traded. If that were the case then any side that traded a draft pick off to get a mature age player would be the winner. That's not true.

Dempsey and Lonergan over Richards any day of the week and for many years to come.
